Take special care at night by Michael Woodman Ogden ALC Safety Office With increased awareness and interest in health, the bicycle is becoming a very popular mode of transportation in today's world. Even with its increased popularity, bicycle awareness by motorists still seems to be at a minimum. Partly because of this fact, more than 500,000 d injuries occur each year in the United States. Many of those result in death. The cyclist is not only undersized and overlooked, but is also mostly unprotected and overexposed. Unlike motorists, bicycle riders aren't surrounded by a steel shell to protect them from bike-relate- motor vehicles. Taking some precautions can help even the imbalance most important, avoid riding at night. It is harder for a motorist to see you after dark. But, if they must ride at night, anything cyclists do to make themselves more visible will improve their chances on the road. Hill AFB and Utah law require that a headlight and taillight or reflector, which is distinguishable for at least 500 feet, must be installed on a bike. The law also directs people to ride with the flow of traffic. Reflectors on the pedals and attached to wheel spokes are an added protection insurance.
