But the forestry division of the United States department of agricnlt-tur- e is endeavoring to persuade railroad builders to experiment with stel railway ties as a substitute for wooden ones of auy kind. The forestry division has ascertained that 30,000 miles of metal ties are in use among the railways of the world. Of these 10,000 are in Europe, especially in Germany, and tho rest are iu Asia, Africa and South America. Tho reason for the government move in f.ivor of steel ties is the steadily diminishing timber supply of the United States. Every year 1,000,000 acres of laud is stripped of its timber to supply the demand for railway ties. This of the whole anuual amounts to timber supply of the country. The government has now only i0,000,000 acres of woodland left, and it becomes nn absolute necessity hereafter to restrict wholesale timber cutting. There are at present only two miles of metal railway ties iu this country. But in view of the coming scarcity of wood, railway officials are beginning to look ahead to tho ti::ie when stsl ties must be placed underneath railroad tracks. , C. P. Huntington, of the Southern id warmly iu favor of use iu all thi tiinlievless regions of the we.-- t. but says it is hard to overcoma the fogy-isof railroad builders on this poijit and induce them to give the sU-e-l ties a trial. In the long run they will bo really more economical than wood, for they last so much longer. & JIM D ALTON A VD CLARA BOYLE. TU. prtit ma4 mmUiml4 img aad daaM artwt. Km LILLiE MORRIS.
