Show r f HILL TOP TIMES Friday, August 1, 1986 FITSS (COIfiffllbDIfi) By 1st Lt. Jerome M. Reed 388th Tactical Fighter Wing Once again tensions have mounted between the Orange and Green combatants over absolute control of the Great Salt Lake Desert and western shore. This time, a major industrial complex is in jeopardy and officials of the 388th Tactical Fighter Wing here have confirmed that hostilities are inevitable. Exercise Sea SawOwyhee Roundup '86 is the only solution. Beginning today, various active duty units from the Air Force, Army, Navy and Marine Corps, along with Air National Guard and Reserve units, converge here and at Mountain Home AFB, Idaho, to take part in this annual composite force training exercise. According to Col. James M. Johnston III, commander, 388th Tactical Fighter Wing, this exercise provides unique and realistic training to combat-read- y units. "The exercise is designed to allow us to train with various units with different missions than the 388th. It's important that we test our ability to coordinate and 'weld' composite forces into one 'package,' " he explained. Hill participants, the Orange Forces, will engage Green Forces from Mountain Home in simulated Controller chosen as top airman of quarter dlyiTDinigJ war over the Utah Test and Training Range and the Saylor Creek Ranges in Idaho. Orange forces include 32 6 Fighting Falcons from the 388th and reservists from the 419th Tactical Fighter Wings. They will be assisted by 12 5 Eagles from the 405th Tactical Training Wing, Luke AFB, Ariz., and the 49th Tactical Fighter Wing, Holloman AFB, N.M.; Fighter Squadron 201, Naval Air Station, Dallas, Texas; the 37th Tactical Fighter Wing, Marine FightGeorge AFB, Calif ., and Fixed-Winer Attack Training Squadron 101, Marine Corps AS, Yuma, Calif., all flying F-- 4 Phantom lis. Most participants will be leaving Hill AFB Aug. 9. "Actually, the Sea SawOwyhee Roundup is two distinct exercises joined together," said Capt. T.J. Koch, project officer. "We combined the training Mountain Home conducts on the Owyhee ranges with our training to develop a complete simulated war scenario. It's similar to a mini-ReFlag, an annual composite force training exercise conducted at Nellis AFB, Nev., with worldwide participants." Throughout the exercise, officials said, safety is the first consideration for all exercise participants, but realism is the goal. To be successful, pilots will have to fight their way into enemy territory, strike their targets and fight their way out again. "This exercise allows us to realistically practice a war and give the pilots the experience they may expect in actual conflict," Colonel Johnston added. Exercise Sea SawOwyhee Roundup '86 enables F-1- F-1- d g E-3- A KC-13- 5 Stratotanker aircraft. Finally, electronic ground support will come from the 56th Electronic Warfare Squadron, Avon Park, Fla.
