Rather than shooting bullets, rifles fire lasers to activate the beeping vest, signifying that the policeman would have been shot were bullets used. They seek this realism for a reason. "This competition affords an opportunity to refine Air Force security police combat tactics and procedures by... alternate approaches to security, law enforcement and base defense problems and tac tics, said Col. Dennis G. Prescott, AFLC chief of security police. "Challengers" will match their weapons expertise as they fire grenade launchers, machine guns and revolvers at downrange targets. Next, they'll fire combat rifles at pop-u- p targets to test their reactions in a hostile environment. Other phases of the competition include crime and traffic investigation. Here, each security policeman is given a limited amount of time to assess a situation, write the report and citations, and report the results to a judge in a makeshift courtroom. Additionally, military working dogs and their handlers will be tested, while information security specialists will match wits on handling classified material. All the SPs will try to handle an obstacle course, in addition to several other activities. The event officially ends Aug. 8, after a banquet and awards ceremony, during which 10 individuals will be chosen to represent AFLC in the worldwide competition starting Oct. 10 at Kirtland AFB, N.M. training camp The 10 selectees will attend a here in September.
