Undaunted, Utah fisheries biologists laid plans to reintroduce the diminutive trout into waters where it could grow to larger sizes. In late September, wildlife workers electroshocked the Lahontans' home stream and transplanted many of them to a larger stream in Box Elder County. The new stream features a small pond, where biologists hope to encourage growth in the species. Historically, Pyramid Lake Lahontan trout reached weights of up to 60 pounds. While they may never again achieve that record size, the hope is to increase their size and range to ensure their survival as a unique strain of the Deportment of Natural Resources A rare subspecies of cutthroat trout is on the comeback trail in northwestern Utah. Once thought to be ex- tinct, the Pyramid Lake Lahontan cutthroat was native to Pyramid Lake and the Truckee River of Nevada. The fish disappeared from its historic water development range after projects destroyed its spawning grounds in the 1940s. Introduced to Utah 50 years ago, a remnant population of Lahontans lived undetected in a tiny, remote stream near the Nevada border in Box Elder County until 1977, when they were discovered during a Division of Wildlife Resources stream survey of the area. Soon after the discovery, division fisheries biologists began transplanting the Lahontans into a nearby stream throughout 1980, 1981 and 1982. In May of 1980, 200 eggs were Lahontan cutthroat trout.
