Terry Walker 388th Tacticol Fighter Wing Public Affairs An 6 pflot with the 16th Tactical Fighter Squadron has been selected to attend the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School, Edwards AFB, Calif., beginning in July. Capt. John A. Armor, a standardization evaluation flight examiner and instructor pilot, recently completed 1,000 flying hours in the 6 in addition to being selected for test pilot school. "I'm very excited," the captain said. "Going to test pilot school is like a dream come true for me. I want to fly the different aircraft the Air Force owns and learn why the machine really gets into the air. That's a big part of what they'll be teaching us in the school. "Some pilots really want this assignment," he continued, "but some guys don't want it, because it's away from the combat position. It's actually a support position. "Here we're flying for our country and our lives. We're the 'users' of the equipment. As a test pilot, I'll be testing the actual airframe to see what it will do in turns and climbs, so that I can provide the very best equipment for the 'users.' " Captain Armor was already an experienced fighter pilot when he began flying the in June 1982 with 630 hours in the F-- 4 Phantom. He trained in the 6 at MacDill AFB, Fla., and flew it at Kun-sa- n AB, Korea, prior to becoming a member of the 388th Tactical Fighter Wing here. F-1- F-1- F-1- "This is the fourth year in a row I've applied for the school," he said. "They have very rigorous requirements only 20 Air Force fighter pilots were selected for this class out of the . hundreds who apply." The school is divided into three parts: the performance phase which introduces students to performance flight testing; the flying qualities phase which evaluates aircraft flying qualities using military standards as a guide; and in the third section, the systems test phase, student teams conduct flight evaluations of aircraft not in the school's inventory. "The training will be very strenuous," Captain Armor said. "We'll fly in the morning and take academics in the afternoon. There will be research papers to do and a great deal of reading, just like a good college course." Captain Armor, a 1976 graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo., with a bachelor's degree in astronautical engineering, also has a master's degree in systems management from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles., "I enjoy flying and fighting for my country I really hate giving it up," the captain said, summing up his feeling about test pilot school, "but becoming a test pilot is something I've wanted to do all my life."
