Show HILL TOP TIMES m Friday, Augurt31, 1984 more sports 0 Q Its Vol march signup underway, season Hunting on waterfowl set volunteers sought by project head Recently, the Utah Wildlife Board called for a shortened waterfowl hunting season and reduced bag and possession limits in a meeting concerning major damage to Utah waterfowl marshes and the dramatic decline in waterfowl production in the Canada wetlands. The move came after Division of Wildlife Resources waterfowl specialist Tim Provan briefed the board on local flooding conditions and problems throughout the Pacific Flyway. The 1984-8- 5 waterfowl hunting season was set for Oct. 13 through Jan. 6, a full week shorter than last year's. Goose arid swan seasons will open concurrently with the duck opener, scheduled for noon Oct. 13. The board set bag and possession limits for ducks at five and 10 respectively, down from the seven and 14 limits of the last several years. "We felt we had to recommend changes in regulations to protect the birds throughout the fly way," said Provan. "We know hunting pressure alone does not adversely affect waterfowl numbers, but in combination with ongoing habitat problems it could be detrimental." According to Provan, waterfowl biologists are particularly concerned about migrant populations of mallards, pintails and greenwing teal, which make up the bulk of the hunters' bag in Utah. "Our local production of cinnamon teal, redheads and ruddy ducks is also way down," says Provan. "We're worried that these three species will be hard hit by Wasatch Front hunters, especially since their numbers are low. "We're not alone in this," said Provan. Nine other western states are considering restricted harvests to safeguard waterfowl populations. is under way at the Youth Activities Center, Bldg. 883 for the Global IV Volksmarch to be held Sept. 15 at Hill AFB.
