Action to offset the short water supply will have to come from all sections of the Utah population, asserted Miles "Cap" Ferry, of Commissioner Utah's Agriculture. "Ranchers who graze their cattle and sheep on public lands will be putting fewer animals on some of their allotments, many of them for a shorter time than usual." extremely dry grass,' brush and trees. Recreational vehicle owners also need to be extra careful this year not to tear up areas that are important watershed features, Commissioner Ferry explained. "The state's groundwater supply is critically low. . Much of the snowmelt runoff or rainfall will just soak into the ground and not flow to rivers and reservoirs" the Commissioner observed. "If RVs chew vegetation, we'll have a lot of soil and other sediment in the water that does get to our municipal water systems." Because culinary and industrial water supplies are threatened, the State Drought Coordinating Committee, appointed by the Governor, will meet on April 10 to consider specific steps Utahns can take to help the meager water supply last through this summer. Such steps might include schedules, careful water use of baths and showers, cutbacks in livestock herd size by farmers and ranchers, selective use of irrigation water on crops and others. William Alder, National Weather Service Meterologist in Salt Lake City, noted recently that most snowpacks around the state range well below normal, with northern s areas only about their average level. lawn-wateri- Even wildlife, which can't be managed as easily as livestock, are getting a close look from the state's resource management leaders. Just last week the Utah Board of Big Game Control strongly considered drought conditions on rangelands in setting big game seasons for 1990. The old license had been purchased for $1.25 by Mr. Peterson's mother, Alice Esklund. The license is in excellent condition and will be placed on display at the Cedar City office of the Division of Wildlife Resources. The first license for wildlife was a commercial fishing license to harvest fish from Utah Lake. It was issued in 1894 for a fee of $5.00 plus Va cent per pound of fish. The 1914 license was both a bunting and fishing license. The wildlife laws were printed in part on the back of the license. They also will be installing a gate and campfire rings on the sites. The support given by the Utah Power & Light Co. is very much appreciated. The campground will be used this summer by local groups and vations are now being made by groups outside the county. There is still a lot of work to be done. Some projects yet to be done are: Cleaning the sports field, and building the amphitheater, painting, assembling and installing tables. This would be a good Eagle Scout project or a project for civic groups to participate in. Call a committee member if you would like to help. Lower Water Level Forces Boaters Caution on Lake Powell The water level at Lake Powell is about 30 feet lower than normal this year. Boaters are advised to use extra caution on the lake. People need to be very cautious, especially after leaving the main channels. There are many rock hazards near or just below the surface of the water. Some of the hazards in the channels are marked by white and orange hazard buoys. Outside of the main channel the hazards are not marked. To avoid the hazards boaters are advised to slow down and proceed with extreme caution. Having someone on the boat keep a lookout for rock hazards and not corners" when ap"cutting proaching the main channel buoy markers are also good safety precautions. An additional way to detect hazards is to watch the contour of the shore, which can provide clues as to where hazards might be. While this method can help boaters pick out hazards, it shouldn't be relied on as the sole way of finding them. "There are going to be hazards this year in places people wouldn't normally expect them to be," said Marc Marcroft, Utah State Park Ranger at Lake Powell. Marcorft is one of two Utah Division of Parks and Recreation rangers wqho assist the National Park Service in patrolling Lake Powell's waters. Lake Powell is under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service, and is part of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.
