I put red noses on a platter of reindeer cookies and plugged in the lights on the pine tree outside. As I ran next door to deliver some freshly baked goodies, I realized I had spent the entire evening carryiI loved as a ng v Vn child. I wondered how these traditions began and why I've continued them. I wondered too, if others have Christmas traditions as cherished. Traditions have such simple beginnings. Each new thing we do has tradition potential. We enjoy something once, then repeat it in subsequent years. We integrate it into our network of Christmas activities. We share it with our loved ones. We make the tradition strong. Each new event in our lives, marriage, a baby, a new home, is an excellent opportunity for a tradition's beginning. Although any tradition ;yn begin any time. And anything can become a tradition. I have often wondered how many generations of my mother's family have found tangerines in their stockings on Christmas morning, or slept Christmas Eve in new pajamas the only gifts opened oefore Santa's mid-nig- MAF1FY arrival. ht Traditions have tremendous longevity. They withstand years of of faes, change of scenery, change of culture. And they remain through rushes of fresh ideas. The practice of observing traditions stays strong as well as do the traditions themselves. New traditions show up all the time. Wonderful traditions, ones greatly enjoyed. If a tradition has been followed through our lives, to us it IS Christmas. If I walked into my Mother's kitchen this holiday season, and the smell of warm gingerbread didn't meet my nose, I'd feel empty (hungry too). Everyone has Christmas traditions. Even scrooge made a habit of saying ''Bah Humbug!" If yoj eat ham or drink eggnog, if you cut your own tree, go shopping w'th a friend, or sing carols to your neighbor, you have a tradition. No matter what you do, if you do it at Christmas time it counts. One of the most impressive traditions I've seen takes place in a tiny village in New Mexico. rich with the heritage of Old Mexico gathers its entire citizen force on Christmas eve to light the village with luminaries. These small, brown paper bags filled with sand to secure a lighted candle, carry on the MexicanCat- -, holic tradition intended to light the way for the Christ child. The sidewalks and pathways are lined with flickering light. Each building's exterior is aglow. Every street, home and business in the village serves to luminate the holy night and reflect authentic southwestern culture. Spectators, observing their own traditions, come from hundreds of miles to drive through this quaint village (headlights off) and witness the wonder of an age old traditTul-aro- sSfc.J'A--- ft Ml) U .... iiS BfatKf f m 85 - mm n i'.'h... jtili...w'fT DON'T MISS the "official" video history Harlem Globetrotters; 6 Decades of Magic NOW AVAILABLE from Fries Home Video WELCOMES THE MAGICIANS OF BASKETBALL GAMES!
