These two definitions are found in the dictionary defining And Baccalaur-ea- t. for many years in Milford we have been attending and enjoying these exercises. I wondered when Mllford High held their first Bacca- So Monday I sat down and enjoyed calling and visiting with many of our dear people of Mllford. I also found out many other facts. I first talked to Naomi Hughes who came here In 1936 with her husband Mr. J.M. Hughes a math teacher at Mllford High. She said she had always remembered having a Baccalaureate. laureate. had only their graduating exercises. I believe Cuma Is our oldest graduate from Mllford High still living here In Mllford. Letha Smyth who In 1922, graduated doesn't remember having a Baccalaureate. Charles graduated In 1924 and he said just he and Charles Glenn were the only graduates that year. I talked to Vvs Baxter, and she said she never graduated from here, but she gave me a note of Interest, that ever since High School had started here there hasn't been a time when a Baxter hadn't attended all descending from Charlie and George Baxter. Verle Horton didn't remember a Baccalaureate, but does remember the girls wearing formats at their graduation in 1937. None of the people I talked to wore caps and gown's. Selma Kirk graduated in 1936 and said their class was the largest class (at that time) to graduate from Milford High with 24. Selma said they didn't have a year-- " book. She had a Hilltop Echo School paper that had an article In It about their Baccalaureate Program as follows: The Milford High Orchestra played "Hyden Suite Arietta In E Flat." The invocation was by Bishop E.H. Bird, and Rock of Ages sung by the congregation. Violin solo by Margaret Moore. The "Baccalaureate address by Dr. Robert D. Steele, President of Westminster College In Salt Lake. Bass solo by Ralph Thompson, "Rocked In the Cradle of the Deep." Another selection by the Milford High School Orchestra. Benediction Lucille by Estes, Methodist Minister. Selma said the Milford High Or chestra played beautifully. Faye Thompson remembered her Baccalaureate.. "She said that in 1938, the year she graduated, they had a yearbook. There hadnt been a yearbook in Milford High for a long time." The first yearbook was edited in 1918 and the year they stopped, I havent that information. I do know there wasn't a yearbook at Mllford High during the Depression years. Don Elmer and Marge Turner graduated in 1939 and both remembered their Baccalaureate. It was held at the auditorium. Don remembered the speaker was also Dr. Robert D. Steele. He remembers Dr. Steele helping him get a scholarship at theWestmlnsterCol-leg- e. So the earliest Baccalaureate exercise held in Mllford to our knowledge was in 1936. If anyone knows of an earlier one please let me know. Thanks everyone for your information. I think it is also outstanding that in the past years it has been past graduates of Milford High School that have addressed the graduates at Baccalaureate. They have listened to Professors, Doctors, Judges, Attorneys, Accountant Educator, Chemical Engineer, Air Force Colonel, etc. a credit to Mllford High. THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: Taken from the 1939 year- book, "A sacred burden is this life we bear: Looks on It, left it, bear it solemnly, Stand up and walk beneath It steadfastly Fail not for sorrow, falter not for sin, But onward upward, till the goal ye win."
