Show HILL TOP TIMES 1983 Friday. May 20, Page 23 Survey results point ways to improve communications that Air Force Logistics Command employees will again be asked to voice their opinions through an employee communications effectiveness survey. The survey will focus on how effective AFLC's employee information programs are in getting messages about important issues to the work force. Approximately 6,000 members of the AFLC family, military and civilian, have been randomly selected to receive the survey. This will be the second time the command has polled its work force. More than half of the 3,000 people who received a similar survev last fall completed it. "Ono rf- f Vio mrtcf inforocfmcr0 f Viirirro we found last time," said 1st Lt. Roger L. Overturf, project officer for the survey, "is that Air Force-wid-e issues are communicated much better than AFLC issues." One example is SURE-PA- the Air Y, Force's direct deposit program. Nearly 95 percent of those who responded to the survey knew about the program and the fact that all Air Force members, both military and civilian, may participate. Another example is the Air Force's Fraud, Waste and Abuse program. Of the 1,600 people who responded, 87 percent were aware of the emphasis the Air Force has placed on that program. "In contrast," Lieutenant Overturf said, "those issues unique to AFLC were much less recognizable." Just a little more than half of those who responded knew about the command's Meaningful Measures of Merit program, a management tool used to review the status of important command operations. Most of those who were able to recognize the program serve in supervisory and management positions. And only 34 percent knew that civilians make up nearly 90 percent of the AFLC work force. "We believe the reason programs like SURE-PA- are so widely Y they have the suprecognized is of supervision," all levels of port Lieutenant Overturf said. "That apparently is not happening with the AFLC-uniqu- e programs. "If the data we have is reliable, and I think it is, then it tells us that the most important command issues those things we most want the must be workers to be aware of every functional area involved in the emphasized. Other interesting results of the comsurvey came from open-ende- d ments, suggestions, and recommendations. About half of the 1,600 people who responded included some comment on the back of the questionnaire. Most positive, and included the possible use of a command newsletter. In the Air Force, policies and guidelines designed to balance the rights of both parties are spelled out in Air Force Regulation The regulation specifically prohibits smoking in areas such as conference rooms. However, the issues are complex and it is not practical to define in a regulation every situation that might arise, say Hill AFB Personnel Division officials. The survey findings were based on a return rate of nearly 52 percent. The 3,000 questionnaires were completed and returned to the command Public Affairs Office, which was responsible for the administration of the survey. "We learned a great deal from the first survey," Lieutenant Overturf said. "We're very anxious to see what we can learn from the second. We will be asking the same types of questions, perhaps focusing on some other issues but basically looking for the same type of information." According to the lieutenant, those employees selected to participate should receive the survey package within the next month. Those who do will be asked to fill out and return the questionnaire as soon as possible. |
