Through the years, the Ute Chapter has prospered and grown splitting Friday, May 20, 1983 several times to form other chapters and the state organization. Several of its officers went on to hold higher offices. They included Nathan Mazer, Joe Jacobs, Nolan Manful and Jim Taylor. The Ute Chapter has led the state with significant and meaningful programs in support of the AFA mission, including the first Air Power Symposium held in Utah in 1954. Another first was an early demonstration of the effects of an aircraft breaking the sound barrier. It was held on the Salt Lake Desert west of Hill AFB. The demonstration was supposed to show that the sonic boom was harmless; however, the temporary bleachers holding the press collapsed as the sound pressure wave struck and the entire case of observers were relegated to an ignominious pile in the middle of the desert. Another program receiving national publicity was Project Navajo, where food and clothing were collected and delivered by aircraft and truck to the Navajo Indians in the Four Corners area of Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado. The Ute Chapter has also hosted hundreds of speaking programs with later went on to become famous such as Maj. Frank Borman and Capt. Joe Engle, as well as many Secretaries and Under Secretaries of Defense. The last celebrity being Secretary Casper Weinberger. Many Hill AFB employees have served terms as president of the Ute Chapter. They have been: Max Kennedy, George R.
