Show HILL TOP TIMES Page 22 July 30, 1982 f By Lucinda Schuft Public Affairs Office Houston and his wife when they first arrived. "I love the mountains," he exclaimed. "A friend had shown us pictures of Utah before we left and we had the impression it was just a flat desert. Consequently, he said, the "fabulous mountains" were a very welcome sight. The Houstons enjoy the outdoors and have been pleased with the recreational opportunities in this area. They visited many of the Western states and "most of the national parks in the West." He is also an avid long distance runner and participated in more than 40 races in northern Utah. He and his wife, Liz, had few adjustments to make with the move since the lifestyles here and in Australia are very similar, he said. However, this may not be true for their two sons when they return to Australia. Houston said, "They're both going back with American accents. They're true little Yanks.' Their youngest son will serve as a memento of their time in the U.S. He was born at McKay-De- e Hospital in Ogden. Hill AFB's Australian foreign exchange officer enjoyed "everything" about his tour in the United States. . Squadron Leader Allan G. Houston has been stationed here for the last 2 V$ years as a participant in the foreign officer exchange program between the U.S. and Australia. He is an enthusiastic supporter of the program because it "allows Australian officers to work closely with who they consider their closest ally, the U.S. A Squadron Leader in the Royal Australian Air Force is the same rank as a major in ours. When first stationed here Houston had the rank equivalent to captain and was promoted while here. He is a helicopter' pilot with Detachment 4, 40th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron here and has served the last year of his tour as operation officer for the detachment. Houston and his family enjoyed their stay in Utah, but their time is running out. He said he has extended as long as he can and they will return to Australia tins fall. " "yr 771V va Outside of a few problems with his accent when he tells the tower his call signs, Houston said his flying career at Hill has been enjoyable. His Australian slang used to break everyone up when he first came but he said "they got used to me. Houston said, his most interesting professional experience while stationed here was when he participated in the rescue of an injured man on Ben Lomond Peak. He said this mission stressed the importance of Det. 4. "It only took us 15 minutes to get him out where by any other method it may have taken three hours or longer," he said. "We may have saved his life." He likes the rescue aspect of the ARRS field since it's one of the few areas in the Air Force where the wartime mission can be practiced in actual situations during peacetime. He loves flying in the mountains and enthusiastically described a recent low level flight 50 feet above the ground ' during which they spotted a "huge deer." He said, "Of course, in Australia, it's about the same only you have kangaroos popping up."
