Dowell JNCO Leadership School It appears that a few of us have forgotten the basic honors that we render to our flag and national anthem. Hopefully, this statement will be a reminder for the few who have forgotten. , is Heraldry as old as the human race, and the carrying and honoring of banners has been the habit of nations since the beginning of time. . Flag reflects nation A thoughtful mind when it sees a nation's flag, sees not the flag, but the nation itself. And whatever may be its symbols, its insignia, this person reads chiefly in the flag, the government, the principles, the truths, the history that belongs to the nation that sets it forth. The American flag has been a symbol of liberty and many rejoice in it. The story of the origin of our national flag parallels the story of the origin of our great "country. As our country received its birthright from the peoples of many lands who were gathered on these shores to found a new nation, so did the pattern of the Stars and Stripes raise from several origins back in the mists of antiquity to become emblazoned on the standards of our infant republic' On Dec. 22, 1942, Congress passed a joint to assure resolution, Public Law 829-7uniform practices of honoring the flag throughout the nation. It floats in majestic silence above the hosts that execute those choices, whether in peace or in war. And yet, though silent, it speaks to us. speaks to us of the past, of the men and women who went before us, and of the records they wrote upon it. And from its birth until now it has witnessed a great history, has floated on high the symbol of great events, of a great plan of life worked out by a great people, v I hope that this statement of mine has served to remind us all of our responsibility and duty to our country, its flag and national anthem.
