The letters stand for Exit Drills In The Home. It's a plan of escape for occupants of a building during a fire or emergency. It's important to have a thorough plan; it's too late to think of one when the building is on fire. A person must be' totally capable of escape, and the only way to ensure that is to practice. Here are a few easy steps to follow to prevent a loss of life due to fire: Sit down and establish a plan. This plan should include going to a predesignated meeting place,- - taking a head count to ensure everyone is out of the building, sending someone to call the fire department, and helping anyone who is hurt. Practice this plan until the group- is able to respond quickly and effectively. Everyone should sleep with the door to his or her room closed. This .delays heat and smoke entering the room, therefore giving the occupant more time to safely evacuate the building. If you should awake and find the room starting to fill with smoke, first sound the alarm (a whistle works well for this). A system needs to be developed to ensure everyone hears the alarm, i.e., one sound of the whistle means alarm, - sounds of the whistle means acknowledgment of the alarm. Because the temperatures above you can be 1,200 degrees or more, and just air can one breath of the super-heate- d kill you, you should roll out of bed rather than stand up. Crawl along the floor to the door, and check the door for heat by using the back of your hand. If the door is hot, crawl upon the floor to the window, remove the screen, and escape. If the door is not hot, open it slowly to ensure smoke and heat have not developed to the point where escape by the normal route (front or back door) is impossible. two If escape by the normal route is possible, do so very cautiously, ensuring everyone in the household is aware of the fire. If you have small children, advise them to crawl to windows and, if unable to get out, just wait for mom or dad to come and help them out. After you escape, go to your predesignated spot and wait for the others to arrive. If you are able to escape, never return to the burning building. Each year, many people who had escaped from a burning building went back after a ring, clothes, etc. and lost their lives. (LOGNEWS from the Spacemaker) . |
