A Department of Defense program, which is nearing completion, is testing a system that will be able to detect even the "casual" abusers of marijuana. According to Col. (Dr.) George B. Zeiner, director of professional services in the Air Force Logistics Command surgeon's office, the products tested for, called cannabinoids, which are retained in the liver, have a half-lif- e of 12 hours. "That means that half of the product is gone after the first 12 hours and half of what remains will be there after 12 more hours and so on," the doctor . explained. Because of the extended life, cannabinoids in the urine of a casual abuser can be detected as much as a week after smoking a joint. The reductions will affect all of Air Force Logistics Command's Air Logistics Centers, as well as its Cataloging and Standardization Office at Battle Creek, Mich. J u Under the test program, medical at Brooks AFB, Texas, are monitoring 10 percent of the urine samples submitted to them for THC content. Most of that 10 percent is random testing, but, when requested to do so, personnel in the drug abuse detection laboratory perform the test on particular samples. Of the 10 percent samples, 29 percent to 40 percent come up positive. Security police officials explained that if the test is adopted, adjustment time more widespread testing for marijuana.
