Gold Hill III HILL TOP TIMES 197H rr?S;3f Page 17 s More than just a day of flying The skies over western Utah were filled with fighter aircraft last Thursday as Operation Gold Hill III got under way. Most of the strikes against enemy targets were flown in the morning. The afternoon was devoted to search and rescue missions. The 388th Tactical Fighter Wing (TFW) Aircrews from the 388th TFW were placed in remote areas of the desert and one crew was placed in Willard Bay, north of Ogden to here organized the exercise involving eight types of aircraft from nine different bases, to give aircrews practical experience in forming strike missions. simulate "downed" aircrews. per- Key to the training was experience the airmen gained from performing their Flying over the "downed" aircrews in the missions along side unfamiliar aircraft. desert, aggressor aircraft attempted to prevent the friendly rescue forces from reaching the "survivors" while friendly CAP (combat air patrol) fighters raced in to drive the aggressors away. Rohr, com- mander, 388th Tactical Fighter Wing, was on hand May 26 to hand out certificates of completion to 19 members of the wing upon their completion of training as members of the Disaster Preparedness Mobility Team. The class was trained in Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical decontamination and protection. They will now deploy with the wing as a Disaster Preparedness team and also serve as its aircraft munitions decontamination team. Colonel Rohr presented -- also personal congratulatory letters to each member praising their appointment to the team. C-1- 30 N There were no fighters involved in the water rescue at Willard Bay due to restricted airspace. Joining the Utah flyers were RF-- 4 Reconnaissance Phantoms from the 67th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing, Bergstrom Two types of airborne control aircraft were involved in the exercise. F-ll- s, F-1- 00 C-1- 30 The exercise was much more than just an elaborate day of flying. The aircraft were divided into "aggressor" and "friendly" roles.
