Show Page HILL TOP TIMES 2 November 23, 1977 turn I would like to know why the ladies aren't given more privacy at the base gymnasium on ladies exercise day? I go to the gym and find it is filled with dependents and men. The base gymnasium and facilities are available to all A Hill Air Force Base military personnel and their Swimming pool repairs depen- dents whenever the gymnasium is open. "Ladies Day" as originally scheduled, was set up to allow Hill AFB ladies exclusive use of the gym three days each week from 9 to 11 a.m. With the increase of WAF personnel and female dependents, it became necessary to make the gym facilities available for both men and women all the time. With the addition of the sauna for the women, the gymnasium is now open for all Hill AFB military personnel and their dependents on a joint use basis. We do have a ladies exercise class on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9 to 10 a.m. on the main gym floor at no charge. All personnel not in this class are asked to stay out of this Q A area. Early closing of Hobby Shop My complaint concerns the Base Hobby Shop. The hours Q have been changed and this creates a problem for some of us working on the day shift because it closes so early. Another thing is they only have one person working at night and he has to run back and forth to the tool crib, which wastes our time and money. Q Retirement vs. Social Security Q Why is the base swimming pool being closed down for repairs at this time of the year? Shouldn't these repairs have been done in the summer when the other pools were available? It was determined in April 1977 that the swimming pool heating unit needed replacement. Two solutions were investigated by the Base Civil Engineer. One was to replace the heating unit with steam and the second was to repair the heating unit in use. On June 6, it was determined that the most economical system was to use steam. The new parts to utilize the steam were ordered in late June and have just been received. The pool is now closed down for repairs and should be open again around the first week in December. Cigarettes Thank you for giving me an opportunity to explain the reason for the changes in the Hobby Shops. We have traditionally attempted to provide maximum hours and services at the Hobby Shops at a minimum cost to the user. Inflation has caused wages and other operational costs to rise so high that action was required to bring the entire operation into a more cost effective posture. To correct this, we could either increase dues and fees or A purchased from the Pantry Kitchen or the Base Exchange. A limited variety of cigarettes are carried at the cafeteria; however, the law requires that all State taxes be paid on them. Consequently, the selling price is higher than at tne ease n.xcnange ouiieis. reduce costs. The only practical thing to do was to reduce overhead costs. To accomplish this, we reduced the hours of operation in the Auto Hobby Shop, closing at 8 p.m. rather than 9 p.m. and cut all the part-tim- e help, therefore some services previously provided. We will still reducing try to satisfy your needs and those of all the other military personnel. Ladies day at gym Q y ; in have ready many articles concerning the merging of the Federal Retirement System with the Social Security Program. I would like to suggest that the Air Force, specifically Hill AFB, release an article to clarify the government worker's position on this proposal. The public needs to know the real facts concerning our retirement system and how it works. I Your comments are timely and well taken concerning e publicity generated by a Congressional proposal to consolidate Federal Retirement and Social Security. The apprehension on the staff of the Office of Information to generate rebuttals stems from the mandate Congress issued some time ago to government information functions: inform but not influence. For the Office of Information to generate public releases on the controversy would not be in the best interests of the Air Force. It would be construed as trying to influence the Congress on how to vote on the issue. Hill Air Force Base personnel, writing as a private citizen, are not prohibited from writing lee tters to the editor of newspapers on such matters. off-bas- cafeterias off-bas- aren't there any tobacco products, such as cigarettes and cigars, available at the various cafeterias for military personnel? The way it is now, you cannot purchase them until the BX or Picnic Pantry opens. Why No family nights at Dining Hall Due to the forthcoming holidays, there will be no Family Nights for November and December at the Airmen's Dining Hall. The Base Restaurant sells cigarettes in vending machines only and is not authorized to purchase or sell tax-fre- e cigarettes. Both military and civilians are invited to use the cigarette machines.
