Show Page HILL TOP TIMES 6 August 26, 1977 Labor Day holiday safety depends on drivers only By R. Gayle Anderson The forthcoming Labor Day holiday has been celebrated in this country as an honor to the working man since 1882. Hope you caught the "Honor The Working Man" part of that statement. That doesn't mean we want to honor him at a nice, quiet funeral or by gathering in respectful silence around a hospital bed. Such actions just shouldn't be part of the holiday. Historically, the Labor Day weekend is one of the worst periods for traffic fatalities of the entire year. Would you believe that over the past 10 years an average of 860 workers have made that long weekend their last weekend. They were the lucky ones . . . thousands more survived, only to spend endless weekends in beds, or wheelchairs, or on crutches, or worse. The daddy or mommy who used to bring home the bacon is now using it up faster than insurance coverage can provide. Then it's up to the surviving members of the family (if any) to somehow scratch up the additional income needed to care for the paralyzed, maimed or disfigured former breadwinner. Even being permanently crippled physically is probably better than being crippled emotionally by knowledge that you had destroyed members of your own or someone else's family. Quoting statistics or trying to point out the sickening aftermath of a needless, useless death or disability won't prevent many accidents. Only you can do that. Only you can take the time to insure your automobile or recreation vehicle is in top condition. Only you can make sure you get enough sleep the night before that long drive. Only you can take frequent rest breaks along the way to guarantee alertness. It's your temper that gets away, causing you to take rash chances. You are the one who drives with a heavy foot on the throttle pedal. Only you can resist the temptation of a few cool beers or a cocktail or two before driving. TIME A&AM... Dwindling Fuels May Make More Precious Than Diamonds As part of their efforts under the new National Energy Plan, the Military Services are again turning to the use of coal. There are limits, however, to the program. Although coal will fuel base power plants, the Navy's ships will never return to its use. The nuclear power plants that propel one of the giant carriers today would have enough energy to substitute for the thousands of tons of coal that stoked the boilers of the Great White Fleet that sailed around the world in 1907-- Give A TOOT;f AFLC OFFICE OF INFORMATION School begins Monday give children a brake 8. Many Americans, justifiably proud of the achievements great power that it is, are unaware of the reasons behind it. If it had not been for the lucky combination of a large concentration of coal and iron in the eastern United States, coupled with the arrival of the railroad on the scene, the growth of which the United States is so proud would not have occurred. of the United States in becoming the TH 0 ITU Mopeds need license; drivers require helmets By Robert T. Rust The Sunday, July 31 Salt Lake City Tribune had a rather extensive article on MOPEDS. It pointed out that MOPEDS effectively get 100 miles to a gallon of gasoline; that they travel between 17 to 25 miles per hour; and that they are very popular in Europe. Coal again might well determine the fate of the United States, since the United States has underground apof the world's coal reserves. In proximately coal 90 constitutes fact, per cent of the U.S. conventional energy reserves, but currently supplies only 18 per cent of the Nation's energy demands. one-thir- d President Jimmy Carter recently said before Congress and the Nation, in connection with his proposed energy program, '"Even with vigorous conservation, America's needs for nergy will continue to grow for the next decade. Although the United States will eventually make extensive use of solar and other energy resources, it will have to rely, for at least the next two decades, on the conventional sources now at han- : oil, natural gas, coal, nuclear power,- - and hydroe ectric power." - It would appear that their popularity would probably increase in the U.S. due to the energy crunch. We believe it imperative to point out certain problems which exist at this time. In the first place, the State of Utah, under current law, classifies MOPEDS as motorcycles. With such classification, therefore, helmets for those under 18 are required when used off the installation. On the other hand, Air Force is leaning towards a different classification than motorcycles with the intent to treat such conveyances as a bicycle with a motor. The hooker in this policy is that the instruction goes on to state that state law ultimately governs. are advised by state authorities that the Utah state legislature will be asked to examine this matter at their next regular session with the view to changing the law to We exclude MOPEDS from the motorcycle definition. Our position then has to be, at this time, that because of the state law MOPEDS are motorcycles. Driven on this base they will, therefore, require a helmet. You should also be aware that at this time with a within the state, registration, classification motorcycle and would license also be required. tax, plates We suggest caution in purchasing MOPEDS until better definition and clarification can be provided. We shall continue to work with the problem and provide precise information as soon as possible. comprehensive coal research and deve?cpment program is a high priority. Since most coal will be burned directly, the most pressing need is for the development of more effective, economical methods to meet air pollution control standards. One method of doing this is by grinding and washing the coal to reduce the sulfur and ash content, thereby reducing the cost to the environment. A Although coal is used primarily as a fuel to generate heat and power, considerable research is underway to develop new uses. Among the processes in various stages of research or development are those dealing with the production of carbon black from coal, the synthesis of foodstuffs, the treatment of sewage and organic wastes with coal, and conversion of coal to synthetic gas and liquid fuels. It is most interesting that George Orwell, who wrote the n prophetic book 1984, also wrote another In it to The Road he Pier. said, prophetic book, Wigan "Our civilization is founded on coal more completely than one realizes until one stops to think about it. The machines that keep us alive, and the machines that make the machines, are all directly or indirectly dependent on less-know- coal." Although Orwell was writing in the context of the 1930s, The Road to Wigan Pier may be more prophetic of the 1980s than his most famous work. or pui nm.iv w filling auvci uscu in Vina puuiivaiiuii iiiusi uc umuc aianauic of sex to the or national the without creed, race, color, purchaser. origin patronage regard CiVCl Mod Jl paiium ) By Ron Rich Wrell, Mom, it's nearly here!
