Show Page HILL TOP TIMES 4 April 9, 1976 The Stars and Stripes: Symbol Of Bicentennial By Lt. Col. Willard R. Mumford Chief, Logistics Systems Management Division, Directorate of Materiel Management "Yes, we'll rally round the flag, boys, we'll rally once again shouting the battle cry of Freedom'.' Flags have been used for thousands of years. In ancient times hunters and warriors carried signs or flags so their friends or enemies would recognize them. At a quick glance men could tell whether they should be prepared to fight or be friends. These flags or standards were usually made of animal skins or feathers tied to a pole. In ancient Egypt, soldiers also carried their standards into battle. Each regiment of the Army had its own symbol and the troops followed their standard into battle. In the confusion of the battle the standard served as a rally point to keep the troops together. Standards are mentioned many times in the Old Testament. Numbers Ch.2, Vs. 5: "The Lord said to Moses and Aaron: The People of Israel shall encamp each by his own standard, with the ensigns of their fathers houses. . ." Psalms Ch.20, Vs 5: "May we shout for joy over your victory, and in the name of our God set up our banners." During the Middle Ages the sign that an emperor or king had God'sapproval was his possession of a flag given to him by the Pope. Charlemagne and William the Conqueror both carried papal flags. The Crusaders carried hundreds of special flags blessed by the Pope to give them the guidance of God. Christopher Columbus carried a papal flag with him w hen he discovered America. The rise of nationalism gave birth to flags which were identified with each of the various nations. These flags usually symbolized a nation born with the approval of God. When the first battles of the American Revolution were fought, the colonists were united in cause but no one banner symbolized this cause. Each colony had its own official flag, but a new identity was sought. . . an identity of states united together to obtain liberty and freedom. It was never recorded how the U.S. flag was selected. Why we have the red, white and blue and the stars and stripes. Some say the idea was taken from George Washington's coat of arms which has a silver shield, two horizontal red stripes and three red stars. Another story says t he idea of the stripes REC0N Recordmaker Materiel Management has came from Mrs. Washington's striped Tom cat! Another story goes that Washington once stated: "We take the star from heaven, the red from the Mother country, separating it by white stripes, thus showing that we have separated from her and the white stripes shall go down to posterity representing liberty." Makes a good story, but there is no proof that Washington really said it. The best guess as to the origin of the stripes is that they were derived from the striped Dutch flag which was used on many colonial ships. It has long been a symbol of religious and political freedom before the Revolutionary War. Historians again are not sure of the origin of the stars , but it is known that before the flag was designed stars had been used to symbolize the new American Union. The words "New Constellation" were used to represent the new nation being born the way new constellations of stars suddenly appear in the sky. been credited with a RECON Jill. ; savings of more than $260,000 for the Air Force.
