Despite the taste of turpentine, the beer was an antiscorbutic, helping to prevent scurvy. In 1X30, the U.S. Government issued 72.537 gallons of whisky in legal rations to the military at a cost of S22.132. Realizing that whisky and desertion often went hand in hand.
