But, he cautions, learning principles in school and carrying them out in the field are two completely different things. To help him apply those principles, Willie relies on his prior service experience. "I've been around and I know the value of human resources, the importance of listening to subordinates. "When I was enlisted I thought so many times, 'If only this guy would listen. . .' "So now, I'm open to suggestions. "If a person is wrong, then I'll tell him, but not in a discouraging way. Nothing is more damaging than to suppress a man because of his rank. We have to work as a team, y'know." And part of working as a team means keeping up good communications. That accounts for Willie's being out on the flightline at four in the morning, talking to the sentries. "I'm out there not just because it's a requirement," he says. "The men recognize that and appreciate the extra effort. WAITING FOR SUN "I know what it feelslike to be out like that. I've been there - standing in the tall grass at night, shuddering, just waiting for the sun to come." is generous with praise to his subordinates. Willie Paul Ferderber and MSgt. Jeral Kennedy and the other supervisors. "These are people who can make or break you," he says. "I don't hesitate to call on their years of experience, when it comes to making a decision." Willie's openness shows in his attitude toward changes: He is not in the least bit hesitant about making them. And he is a realist. "I know that having things the way you want them to be as compared to the way things really are is a Utopian ideal. So you have to use the existing resources. That attitude prevents a lot of the frustration that comes from saying, 'We can't do that because we don't have this or that.' "I mean, ourselves we could excuse right out of existence', right?" M AKING CHANGES Making changes is his goal. "I think that's what it's all about, growing in the job and then using your experience to make changes. "In my earlier years I saw a lot of bad things go down, things that shouldn't have happened. But there have been changes, mostly for the better. I want to get to a position where I can make some of those changes myself." Willie's next step in that direction is his assignment to March AFB. California where he w ill serve on the Fifteenth Air Force Security Police Inspection Team. What will he do in the meantime? He smiles, "To continue to strive for excellence." I non-credi- t, r -1 Interest Lower Than Stated QUESTION: My eyes were opened when I purchased my present home. I was complaining about the high rate of mortgage interest until the REALTOR showed me that the ACTUAL interest I was paying was much lower than the stated amount because it was all tax deductible. I think your readers might appreciate some facts and figures on this point. ANSWER: You are absolutely right! Let's use a 9 percent mortgage interest rate as an example If you are earning between $12,000 and S16.000 and are in the 25 cost of interest is 6.7 percent bracket, your after-taS24,0OO and S28,0O0 If between are earning you percent. tax 34 in and are the bracket, your actual interest percent cost will be 5.4 percent. If you happen to be fortunate enough to earn between $44,000 and $52,000 and are in the 50 percent bracket, a 9 percent mortgage interest rate will actually cost you only 4.5 percent after taxes. This is an extremely important deduction because in the beginning years of the mortgage, almost all of the month! payment consists of Interest. x Commonwealth June II and 21. to 2 p.m. - Introduction to Photography for and Teens Adults. 14 years and over.
