The ceiling on hiring civilians was lifted in early 1942 -by May 1943, there were 15,780 civilians and around i6,000 military personnel on the field. Nearly 22,000 people. Multiplied by four - one mom, one dad and a couple of kids - 888,000 more people added to the population of the little towns and cities surrounding the field. The entire population of Weber County in the 1940 census was only 56,714. Recruiters from Hill Field had fanned out across the land like zealous, dedicated missionaries.
