Show November 7, HILL TOP TIMES 1973 Page 7 Brig. Gen. James P. Mullins: n LoDTTDDft I would like you to be aware that we have established an Environmental Protection Committee at Hill AFB. I serve as chairman of this group. We have already done a great deal to protect our environment. For example, our industrial waste treatment plant processes more than gallons of acids, water, chemicals and other liquids each month. And we are far ahead in the treatment of industrial 400,000 wastes. The Ogden AMA plant as been in operation since years before "environmental protection" 1956, became a household word. Another example is our "hush houses". These noise-reduci- ng have of the noise quieted jets during necessary ground operation of the engines. As you can see, much has buildings F-- 4 been done by Ogden AMA to the environment. protect But, much more remains to be accomplished. ...You ain't learnin' By Chaplain (Maj.) John II. Herrlinger How many times have you tried to impress someone else only to fall on your face as it backfired? The temptation is to talk too much, drink too much, spend to much, fake too much, brag too much - all to impress. I recall a sign at the entrance to the Crazy House near Pike's Peak which read: "When you're talkin' you ain't .learnin'." How often have you continued talking or feigning knowledge when you could have kept quiet or inquired and eveyone with his stupidity when he overinflated and exploded. The only person who continues to be impressive is the one who doesn't need to. The expert doesn't line his walls with all his diplomas; he doesn't have to. The amateur does, because what he has to display is all he has, and that's not much. St. Peter and St. Paul were most, impressive when they were least impressed with themselves. Are you impressive, or impressed, with yourself? f That is where the En- iniDWOiniinfi) Protection existing vironmental Committee comes in. It is currently looking into ways in which we can limit the abuse of our environment without impairing our mission effectiveness. The committee is examining a wide spectrum of possibilities. Typical of these is more efficient disposal of scrap lumber, waste paper and contaminated hydraulic surrounding communities. Your suggestions and ideas should be forwarded through your supervisor to your director or commander who is a committee member. determined that we as individuals will do everything in our power to protect our environment. I will keep you posted on our progress, and I solicit your help and suggestions for a successful program here at Ogden AMA and in the only to be in compliance with environmental standards, but also to take those actions now which will insure that we continue to do so in the future. best be accomplished if we are all aware of the problems and are This can prig. Gen. James P. Mullins, AMA Ogden vice commander fluids. As I'm sure most of you know, larger metropolitan areas, such as Los Angeles, have already suffered enormously from pollution. We have even heard speculation that the use of automobiles may be prohibited in these areas unless a way can be found to significantly reduce the pollutants dumped into the atmosphere by these vehicles. Similar problems exist in other areas and many industries are finding themselves in violation of En- vironmental Protection Agency standards because environmental considerations have been neglected for so long.
