The survey, "Young Men Look At Military Service," is part of a broader Youth In Transition project which followed young men from the start of their tenth grade (Fall of 1966) to the time when most of them had been out of high school for about a year (Spring of 1970). The project is being conducted under a U.S. Office of Education contract, with Department of Defense support. Among its most basic purposes, Youth In Transition includes the study of attitudes, plans and behaviors, particularly those relating to educational and occupation aspirations and achievements. The Department of Defense, of course, placed special emphasis on anti-milita- ry military plans and attitudes. Some of the findings have been highly significant. For instance, the majority of the young men do not fit the "generation gap" stereotype of rebellious youth casting aside the values of their elders. In fact, the dominant position they express essentially supports the principles Americans have lived by for decades. They are not strongly opposed to the war in Vietor pacifists. They agree nam, nor are they that it is important to fight the spread of communism. The majority see good citizenship primarily in terms of obedience to law and pride in country. For them military service provides an opportunity to serve their country. Salvation Kearney Hippocrates in 370 B.C. took his fingers, tfc to a youth's abdomen, and asserted that this aspressed with diseases was of internal origin, related to the. harmful body humors. Modern-da- y diagnosticians willVi you the same regarding the moral body of America H diseases are of internal origin, related to the presence f harmful body humors. One disease obvious to all is the breakdown of th American family. Not so obvious even to the profound H pocrates of our day is the basic cause for the decay of ou" society's No. 1 cell. That cause is the family's failure to rely on a Principle greater than itself. Flagrant breaches of authority within and without the family are living proof of this. Failure to rely on Divine Providence through prayer of adoration robs every family of reverence for authority-divinor human. Inability to relate to the Almighty through prayer of contriteness leaves no outlet for a family to lay bare its soul in sorrow and contrition for modern-da- y errancy No familanty with an "Our Father" leads a family of ingrates to question reason or reasons for thankfulness. A family speechless in the Presence of the Author of Nature through neglect of prayer of petition stands mute in prai. . the Giver of every good and perfect sing gift . . ." In a word the day the American family bows its head and bends its knee and raises its heart collectively in prayer that will he the day marking its regeneration. That will be the birthday of an America Reborn that once knew God and once knew family prayer as a family giving its Creator His due. Pray God: pour Your heavenly dew upon an arid soil the better that America will once again reflect Your Honor and Glory. e Those who can prove they paid more than the amounts shown in the tables may de- duct the larger ( AFNS) amount. (AFNS) Tax Filing Deadline Nears Taxes have been a fact of life since the earliest of political systems. Today's taxpayer might find some com. fort in the words of Benjamin Franklin. Commenting on Governmental taxation, Franklin said that although taxes are often heavy, there are other "taxes" that are more grievous. "We are taxed twice as much by our idleness, three times as much by our pride, and four times as much by our folly; and from these taxes, the commissioners cannot ease or deliver us by allowing an abatement" Here's a last minute reminder: Tax filing deadline is April 15 only five days from today! 1 Of Drugs and The Lonely Crowd Following in the first of a three part aerie of excerpts from remark by Commissioner lAirry A. Hear, Addiction Service Agency, Sew York City. Hi talk, "Of Drug and The lonely Crowd," was delivered at the annual award luncheon of the Advertising Council, Incorporated.) It is currently fashionable to distinguish between abuse of "hard" drugs and abuse of "soft" drugs. By hard drugs I mean those drugs which are opiates or opiate derivatives, such as heroin and morphine. Cocaine, a derivative of the leaf of the coca bush should also be included in this category. Stimulants and barbitudepressants, auch as amphetamines and LSD and rates and hallucinogenic drugs such as cannabis, fall into the soft drug category. The distinction between "hard" and "soft" drugs is one with which I am not comfortahle because it suggests that while addiction to "hard" drugs must be serious, abuse of soft drugs, while bothersome, tnust not be of great consequence. I am afraid that people who speak of the relative harmlessness of soft drugs tend themselves to belong to communities where Soft drug use Is the mot prevalent. This tendency to externalize the problem as being someone else's serves only to prolong the inevitable confrontation with reality: soft drug abuse is truly destructive. Hard Drug Abute We know a great deal about bard drug abuse. We know that there are between 60.000 and 100,000 heroin addicts in New York City. We know that addicdeaths in tion is the largest cause of health-relate- d the 0 year Id age group in the City. We know thst hard drug" addicts, more often than not, steal millions of dollars annually in goods to support their habits. Addict account for much of the cost of the polke, correction, court, welfare and hospital systems in the City, 15-3- We bare developed snme answer to the hard drug problem however. We have city operated treatment fa4siHUe and community renters where addicts r th4r families or their neighbors c an become involved in the rehabilitation process. We have groups whkh involve relatives of addict. The City now sponsors a new methadone maintenance research program which will involve 5.000 addicts over the next five years. This is a beginning With more money and time to train staff, we will grow, so it is fair to say we are on our way toward a solution to the problem of rehabilitating hard drug abusers. We know a great deal less about soft abuse. We rannot even estimate the number ofdrug people in the City who misuse soft drugs. We cannot measure the cost of abuse in loss of human potential. We do know that whatever portion of the population is involved, the percentage is growing, particularly in the younger age groups. And we know this In 1966. the Federal Food and Drug Administration stated that four billion, five hundred million amphetamine and barbiturate pills and capsules manufactured in the United States an- - Mountain of material have been written about the hallucinogenic: LSD, STI and variousallproduct read t the cannabis plant.
