The B25 bomber he was piloting was shot down near the Japanese Halmahere Islands. The six crew members spent 26 hours in the water before rescue, the general recalled. Commanded Squadron He commanded the 17th Reconnaisance Squadron (Bomb) from October 1944, to March, 1945, and the 71st Tactical Reconnaissance Group from August through December, 1945, when it moved from Ie Shima to Tokyo after the surrender. His postwar assignment was Muroc Army Air Field, Calif, (now Edwards AFB) as a test pilot. Here he flew P59 Aircomet, XP80 the Air Force's first jet fighters Shooting Star, XP84 Thunderjet and XP86 Sabre. Life as a test pilot was fairly exciting, General Wise explained. "We would take the jet up to altitude, then turn it off and try to restart it. If the engine didn't fire and it meant a dead-stic- k many of them didn't landing in the dry-laarea. Fortunately, there was always plenty of open space." Test Director In March, 1950, General Wise became flight test and acceptance director at the Boeing plant in Wichita, Kan. His next assignment took him back to the Pacific where he won his Chinese pilot's wings. WISE He left Formosa in 1955 and was assigned to the Directorate of Procurement and Production in the Deputy Chief of Staff Materiel at USAF Headquarters in Washington D.C., where he became chief of the manned aircraft division. Attend College In July 1959, he was named chief of the B52 Division in the Directorate of Materiel Management at Oklahoma City Air Materiel Area, Tinker AFB, Okla. He left Tinker to attend the Industrial College of the Armed Forces at Ft. McNair, D.C., where he graduated in the summer of 1963. From the time he entered the service, General Wise earned a B.S. degree in military science from the University of Maryland and a master's degree in business administration from George Washington University. General Wise is enthusiastic about his Utah assignment, standing service as chief of the Operations Division, Directorate of Operations, at the Air Force Logistics Command n AFB, Ohio, from August headquarters at Wright-Patterso- 1963, to December, 1965. Commanded Base Air Force Base and the 2750th Air Base Wing on Dec. 21, 1965, the position he held until his assignment as Ogden AMA vice commander July 15, 1968. General Wise is enthusiastic about his Utah assignment, "The people in this area are friendly and cooperative. Despite the fact that his career "requires a lot of hours and a lot of travel," the general finds time for some recreational activities. He plays golf and tennis and he and his wife Antoinette (Toni) participate in a bowling league. Two of the three Wise children are attending Davis County schools daughter, Linda, is a student at Clearfield School. A High son, John, is enrolled at North Davis Junior School.
