Games for children, prizes, square dancing and plenty of time for visiting will highlight the day. Those attending are asked to Sawing Into Missile Fuel is Ticklish picnic lunch. 677 Graduate From OTS LACKLAND AFB, Tex. Solid propellants used in the Air Force Minuteman missiles for fuel must be sawed and machined into various shaped sections for testing and aging programs. About 3,500 of these samples are prepared every month by the 14 employees of the Solid Propellant Machining Sub Unit in the Maintenance Directorate. This wouldn't pose much of a problem except for the nature of the solid fuel. It burns so rapidly when ignited that it is much like an explosion. So, considerable care must be taken during sawing and machining of the substance. Officer Training (AFNS) School Class 68-- was gradu- H ated with commissions being awarded to 677 officers, including 12 Air Force Reservists and five Air National Live a little better between paydays... GET A I Change Technique Machinists who work with the propellant learned early in the program that they would have to change their normal shop technique. For example, they had to wear plastic gloves to shield their hands from irritants and also to keep skin moisture from the fuel. When milling the samples they could no longer stand at their machines, but had to learn to operate the lathes and saws from an adjacent room by observing the action through shatterproof mirrors. The employees not only learned how to cope with the fuel that comes in chunks, and is so different from the familiar metals they formerly shaped, but they even designed a vacuum chuck to hold the fuel in place on the machines. The home-mad- e chucks proved to be about a thousand times more powerful than the regular machine shop vices. Chips Flammable Because dust and chips from the propellant are flammable they burn until consumed whether or not they are in fX GW DIAV QJOT IF REPAID IN 14 690 DAYS-CO- STS PHONE NOWI LOANS UP TO $2500 IM(D(MU tmit-...- .
