It is a memorable date in American history, for it was on this day in 1777, that Congress passed the resolution ordering the first American Flag. flag, an Though June 14 will also see retirement of the to executive order (10798) has directed all commands display the new standard. present flag until replaced by the national holidays for it is our listed is not among Flag Day overshadowed by Memorial and Independence Day. Primarily it is a day in which we glorify our flag. Its significance ? It is surprising to note the number of Americans who cannot give a clear definition. Most of us would say it symbolizes America and give the explanation no further thought. "It stands for America," is a broad statement. Our country, as ny other, can assume many semblances. It does stand for America but only an America built on the factors embodied in the meaning of the flag's color scheme. Red is for the blood of its heroes. This line hardly needs an explanation for there are fragments of land over the world that shall never cease to be a part of America. White for its purity of heart. The purity of heart that has made America the hope of downtrodden peoples of the globe. That which has fed the hungry of the earth, and that for whose purity of inten tion asks only that her children be allowed to live in peace. Blue is for freedom and constancy. That freedom whose per fection she constantly challenges her people to pursue. Freedom which expresses itself from village store, pulpit, press, radio or tele vision. Constancy? That constancy of State which gives Americans the confidence and will to prosper, and that which has made her soluble to all the ills of history. Yes, the flag does stand for America. It is the symbol of our continuance in the democratic way in the face of ereat odds. It stands ' for what is right with America. 48-st- ar ; . - air-to-a- The contract, to be administered by the Air Force procurement office at Cleveland, Ohio, calls for tities of a more complex nature. We will probably never again see the great production lines of the early 1940's, rolling out 100,000 planes a year to support the massive air raids which overwhelmed the enemy. Weapons This has been a logical outgrowth of defense necessities and recent weapons development. The terrific increase in the requirement for high performance weapons has produced a corresponding increase in complexity. Complexity has produced the weapons system method of procurement as the only means by which we can get integrated, functioning weapons into our defense program in any reasonable span of time. In order to meet this important time demand we have been forced into a . very costly procedure whereby we design, develop, test and produce our weapons concurrently. This procedure places new demands on everyone, particular ly on quality control. In order to meet .hese !new demands, it is necour essary to critically procedures and programs as well as our personnel requirements. To day it is necessary to accept experimental and completed weapons without the benefit of specifications or well defined functional 1959 Phone 8-87- 18 |
