Organized in June 1942, it has in a brief 13 years achieved a position unique in musical circles and has captured the fancy and imagination of music lovers oi lour continents. Stressing versatility, the US Air Force band is ONE organization that is capable of resolving itself into a marching band, a symphony orchestra, an symphonic band, a glee club (the "Singing Sergeant,") 5 dance bands (including the "Airmen of Note" and the "Crew Chiefs") and numerous chamber and instrumental groups. Versatility is further accented from a musical performance standpoint inasmuch as the organizaS. HOWAKU COL. Occasion for the visit is the annual "Kid's Day" which is sponsored by Kiwanis clubs of this area. A special day has been planned for the kids which will begin at 11 a.m. and end at 4 p.m. OfSeventy ficers will be on hand to take the small fry on a guided tour of the base. This will include inspecting a Globemaster, maintenance shops, and jet aircraft. This" will be topped off by a movie which will be shown in the base theatre. Any Hillfield workers who would like to bring their children out to the base are invited to do so. It was suggested that they contact their Kiwanis club. The contest is being held as part of annual activities centering around National Fire Prevention Week, October 9 to 15. Prizes of one $50 bond and two $25 bonds will be awarded to three winners of the slogan contest. Sponsored by the Civilian Welfare Association, the contest is open to all civilian employees. Winning slogans will be forwarded to the National Fire Protection Association for recognition in national contests, according to Glenn Wilde, chief of Fire Prevention Section, who is in charge of the contest. Just write a slogan with a fire prevention or fire protection angle, Wilde ' said. Maximum number of words that can be used is 10. When you've completed your slogan, record on the back of the paper your name, place of work, and telephone extension (at HiU AFB). Twining, Air Force Chief of Staff, in an address at the annual meeting of the President's Committee on Employment of the Physically Handicapped. General Twining pledged full support to the president's committee and stated "we will continue our efforts to find ways of improving our program for employment of the handicapped." A victim of polio at age 13, Spike was left with weak back muscles, curvature of the spine, and a dislocated right hip. But in spite of his "physical handicap," Spike is not "job handicapped." Since starting at the base 10 years' ago as a warehouseman, he has advanced to the position he holds 'today. A native of Colorado, he now lives at 205 Flint. Layton, with his wife, Wilma, and three children. In previous years, Hill has won recognition for its program for employment of the physically handicapped. First acclaim came in March 1952 after publication of a booklet, "The Handicapped in Defense," demonstrating the work done by such persons at this base.
