The new soldier of the month, who has over 16 years service with the Armed Forces, has twice achieved the distinction of being named Soldier of the Month. Hicks New Deputy CG Hill Air Force base, nerve center for the Ogden Air Materiel Area, will have a new Deputy Commanding General after July 27th when Col. Homer W. Ferguson leaves for Los Angeles, California and Col. replaces him. Joseph H. Hicks 0 Col. Ferguson will become com manding officer of the Maywood, Calif., specialized depot. The deputy commanding general, Col. Hicks, has been deputy for supply since arriving at Hill AFB in early December 1947. Prior to that, he was chief of supply at the Japanese Air Materiel Area. His military background includes graduat ing from the U. S. Military Acad emy, earning his wings and a com mand pilot s rating while piling up 5600 hours of flying, and the win ning of the Legion of Merit. He served with the Far Eastern Air Force from December 1944 to December 1947. Assuming the office left vacant n by Col. Hicks will be Lt. Col. Shachtman who recently ar rived at Hill AFB from Kelly AFB. Col. Schachtman served in England during World War II and was sep arated from the service in October 1945. In September 1947 he was recalled to active duty as assistant chief of the supply division at Kel ly. He holds the Bronze Star medal, French Croix DeGuerre with gold Hy-ma- star, Presidential Unit Citation with cluster, American Theater ribbon and the World War II vic tory medal. Col. Ferguson, who first came to Hill in July 1946, has a very colorful aviation career that dates back to 1918. High spots in his life include the winning of honorary pilot n ratings in the Bolivian and air forces and the Peruvian distinguished flying cross. His own country has decorated him with the Legion of Merit and the Army commendation medals. Nica-ragua- The Maywood specialized depot which Col. Ferguson will command stores spare parts for the newer type aircraft produced in the Los Angeles area. It is located between Long Beach and Los Angeles. |
