'1 CHILDHOOD DISEASES Since the question frequently arises as to how long it will take an individual to develop a disease following exposure it might be well to first define the term "incubation period." Incubation period has been defined as "the time interval between the infection of a susceptible person and the appearance in him of symptoms of the diseasa in question. Inasmuch as the incubation period varies somewhat, depending on the disease, it might be well to list a few of the mors common diseases of childhood, along with the minimum, maximum, and average incubation period for each disease. However, It la quite safe to assume that it will more than likely be the average number of days given In the table rather than either one of the two extremes. Generally speaking, the incubation period will be shorter when there has been a more-or-lemassive exposure to the causative organism. It Is important to know approxss will come down with a communicable disease imately when - 5 5 a patient following exposure so that the parents might make proper plans for isolation and care of the individual. But, of more importance than that is the fact that it is relatively safe, under the guidance and supervision of the local health officer or public health nurse to permit certain exposed children to continue on in school for a period of time, depending on the incubation period, and particularly where it is a long Incubation period. In that way time lost from school Is considerably decreased and at the same time public health nurses and school officials can watch these children very closely for any Indication of the development of a communicable disease. Knowledge of the length of the incubation period and the time of the exposure is very important from the standpoint of prevention nt certain diseases. When that in- fnmnation is known to the attend ing physician steps can be taken to prevent some or tne cnuimoou riispflspa through Dassive immuni zation with gamma globulin and other materials, wnen gamma globulin is administered early enough in the incubation period, measles can be modified or prevented in tfiat narticular case. It is recom mended by public health officials that young infants ana oiaer cnu dren who are debilitated be pro dayi dayi tected, through the use of gamma globulin, from the infection. Other children should be given a smaller dose of the gamma globulin which would permit for a modification of the disease (mild infection) after which a complete immunity develops. When the disease is prevented the protection only lasts for 4 to 6 weeks and then has to be repeated at the time of an other ) ST IIA in IWn JlLLI GELATIN DESSERT I ENHICHLD oiidciy Oct. Infectious hepatitis (Jaundice) can also be prevented through the administration of gamma gioDu-liIncidentally, this disease has been increasing, In Utah, for tne past two years. More recently it has been learn ed that gamma globulin offers some protection, if given early enough during the incubation period, aeainst the paralytic effects of poliomyelitis. Although this ma terial is not an laeai ponomyenus prevention aeent. yet it is the best that we have available at the present time. Recent field trials carried out with gamma globulin would indicate that it requires hundreds or even thousands of injections with this material to pro tect one child from the disease ior about five weeks. German measles is a childhood disease, but occasionally is not contracted until some years later. If an expectant mother develops German measles there is the possibility that the infant might de s. velop certain congenital aeiorma-tieauch as microcephaly, defec tive hearing, ocular abnormalities, and heart lesion3. German measles in th exDectant mother can be prevented by the administration of gamma gioouiin aunng me early part of the incubation period. Knowing the Incubation period of a disease aids in determining the source of the infection and sometimes helps the physician in making a diagnosis.
