It is a recognized fact that when farmers and stockmen are getting profitable prices that business of all kinds benefits accordingly. There is added confidence In the situation because hlph priced livestock means higher-price- d meats. The fact that these meats are going Into consumer channels with little or no protest Indicates that many consumers are able to pay more money for necessities. U?re on the Los Angeles market last week, a California cattle feeder received $9.10 a cwt for a carload of choice Hereford steers. The same grade and weight of steers these cattle averaged over 1250 pounds were quoted a year aso at not more than 5.50 a cwt. Thus these 1250 pound steers netted U5.00 last week against around a possible price a year ago of around $68.00 a head an increase of about $47.00. There seems to be abundant rea son for the faith in the future of the livestock business. Economists generally agree that 1935 should be a profitable year for livestock producers and feeders. Government reports aiso give hope to the western sheepman, especially the California and Arizoan produc ers of early lambs, many of them going to market only half fat be cause of the high cost and scarcity oi leecis. it soems very likely that In 1935 lamb producers will have the U. S. lamb markets pret ty much to themselves. With admitted higher purchasing power on the part of consumers there seems to bt sound reason for looking forward to comparatively good spring lamb prices. California sheepmen have other factors in their favor this year. Ideal range and pasture feed conditions this winter have made it unnecessary to purchase quantities of hay and dry feeds. In other words, the early season is making it possible for California shtepmen to produce baby lambs for market almost entirely on nat-uifeeds, Arizona sheepmen have been favored with good desert grow th which has also cut their cost of production. Some early lambs in Imperial Valley are now almost ready for Best Buys en-rou- Grapefruit The Livestock Situation Local and Social Local and Social Jan. 31, 1935 Thursday, TWO RED-HO- T 4 i iH Wi. l!'t,ia-W minx GAMES - H- -- 111 ' a t pj & iV -- v I 4 ..rll" . 1 - r fci 18 h -- 11 The Panama canal Is In the throes of a "house cleaning."
