It was fun to learn to fly there in 1947, although I never got too good at making smooth landings, and for some years thereafter 1 contributed my flying column to the Chronicle under the title, WINGOVERS, and the sub-heading (with an insolent smirk at the New York Times), "All the news that's fit to print from the Delta Airport." Reminiscing, the first item in the first column was a "joke" I made up myself, in which instructor Leo Burraston asked flying student Darrel Wright, "How would you like to try a lazy eight?" "Hell, no," replied Darrell. "I just traded a lazy eight for the car I've got now." Some people liked the column, although Frank Beckwith once referred re-ferred to it as Wingovers, Hangovers, Hang-overs, and Music Lover's Guide. This was sour grapes, however, be cause he was writing the Toots column in those days, and I was pulling some of his readers. My column also predicted forthcoming blessed events, one of whom, upon arrival, was named Lloyd Dean Burraston. On that subject, when former Delta communicator, Bob Nichol's wife, Jackie, was in a family way, it became my duty to report the fact that when Bob was notified that things were happening happen-ing in the Salt Lake hospital, he climbed into the Aeronca Chief and headed that way. The stork proved better at flying than the Chief, though, and it beat im to the hospital. hos-pital. I gave up blessed eventing, however, how-ever, after my prediction of student stu-dent flyer Glen Christensen's first, subsequently named Nola, went awry by a couple of months, feeling feel-ing that if their own fathers couldn't tell when they were coming, com-ing, I sure couldn't. Anyway, flying was the main activity at the airport. This might be a good time for me to say goodbye to everybody, except that I'm not going anywhere. any-where. I expect to be around quite Millard County Chronicle Thursday, October 23, 1969 a while yet, carrying on like the hoodlum I've always been. I trust my successor will not be diverted from the straight and narrow. Being Be-ing mayor over a town of two thousand vigorous and imaginative souls has been an experience I'm not likely to forget, and my one regret re-gret is that after January 6, people will no longer be calling me honorable. honor-able.
