Show Millard County Chronicle n 7 1 ucwn mcwm By INEZ RIDING "I know none of you will come up hpre and bite me, but all of a sudden sud-den I find myself scared stiff." The above is not very earthshak-ing, earthshak-ing, but it was to me at the time I said it. I don't often stagefright, but I REALY suffered at the recent press convention where I was appearing on a panel. I felt that I was speaking too loudly. I felt that my lipstick was smeared. I felt that my clothes were slicking to me like a great smothering sheet. I felt that my glasses were playing tricks on me and I could not find one friendly face. My mouth became dry. Then more dry. Then very dry. My lips began to stick to my teeth. My voice became unreal to me. It sound as if I were speaking thru the big end of a megaphone. I was scared. After confessing my fear to an understanding audience, things went better. But, it's an experience that I hope to shun in the future! What causes stage fright? I agree with the writer that says' persons who are suffering (and believe be-lieve me that's the right word) stagefright, is thinking only of SELF. In my own self-concern, I forgot about the audience. That's a pretty bad thing to do. When concern is turned only inwardly, in-wardly, then all suffers. MARK TWAIN Bob and I caught Hal Holbrook's impersonation of MARK TWAIN Monday night. What a treat. I became be-came so engrossed with Mr. Hol-brook Hol-brook that I found I was not concentrating con-centrating as closely as I could have been on Mark Twain! Mr. Hoi brook is a fine actor, isn't he? And how about that makeup job? I par ticularly enjoyed his GHOST STORY. We Pylands used to tell that same one and to hear it again evoked all kinds of fond memories. Believe it or not, I found my self sitting on the edge of my chair just as I used to. I hope it will be shown again at an earlier hour. PORTER ROCKWELL I have completed the book on Porter Rockwell that I mentioned last week. Porter Rockwell became a live person to me and one that I would have liked to know. He has joined my rather limited list of favorite historical characters. The book is the first that I've ever read on the history of the LDS Church. I have read many books' on doctrine doc-trine but never one on history. SGT SHERWOOD URGES DRIVERS TO LOCK CARS The Utah Highway Patrol reminds re-minds everyone to "REMOVE YOUR KEY AND LOCK YOUR CAR", as a preventative of auto theft. Sgt. Elden Sherwood of Nephi says that eight out of ten cars stolen sto-len were left unlocked. He points out that four out of every ten cars stolen had the keys in the ignition and five out of ten cars stolen were taken by youngsters under 18 years of age. ... There are four steps Sgt. Sherwood Sher-wood says that all drivers should remember to curtail the mounting number of stolen cars. These steps are 1. Remove the ignition key; 2. Lock all valuables in the trunk; 3. Fasten all windows, and 4.- Lock all doors. "If all drivers follow these four simple rules," Sgt. Sherwood says, "the National Auto Theft Prevention Preven-tion campaign will receive a big boost." ' 864-2771 Thursday, March 9, 1967 ft. SJVi In a rather vague way, I knew of the early church persecution. I didn't know it. I didn't feel it and therefore I questioned if it were as bad as I had heard. This book makes that period of the Church very real to me. The book made me see that Porter Por-ter Rockwell was a firm believer in the church. He was a doer who, as I saw him, conscientiously work ed for the betterment of his Church as he saw fit. I lived that book. I chased Indian raiders with Porter Rockwell. I helped him when the US Army troops came Into Utah. I laughed with him. I made trips to California with him. Not knowing all the myths and legends that had grown up about Porter Rockwell, I was able to begin be-gin the book with an attitude of learning about a great man. Harold Schiendler, author, dispelled dis-pelled any doubts that I may have entertained thru heresay that Porter Por-ter Rockwell was other than what a person should be. He had convictions con-victions and he stood up for them. The Bookmobile will be ot the old Delta High School on Wednesday, Wednes-day, March 15th because of Spring Vacation. TO THE EDITOR Dear Editor: I should keep silent and be a philosopher, but with simple elegance ele-gance I wish to voice my opinion in regard to the article concerning aur Delta High School which appear ed in last week's Chronicle. Five of our six children have grad uated from DHS and our children have bten in close association with most of the youth of the valley. May I speak thru the mouths of our children when I say that the morals of the students (generally speaking) have been and still are above reproach. May I add, one of our choicest blessings has been and still is the privilege of raising our children among these young people Part of the happy growing years is following the styles and I praise the teachers for working with the parents in teaching modesty. This growing up entails a well-rounded program as you parents know. It includes laws and rules which the youth must learn to obey. The important im-portant thing is that the faculty is interested enough to put forth an effort to assist and be helped in rounding the lives of these talented young people we send out into the world, who send back honors to our community. (Hnors in conduct as well as scholastic honors.) Isn't this proof enough that the school isn't lax or lacking? The school has a very fine outstanding out-standing program and I am grateful grate-ful that our boys and our Ladd can participate pnd excell in athletics. Our girls won honors in essays, typing ty-ping and for the school. I am not aware that they were slighted. They received due recognition. Per haps in another's eyes this program can be enlarged upon and more reecognition shown. If such is the case, I am sure our outstanding studentbody will appreciate suggestions. sug-gestions. Let us stand behind them, not criticise. Where there is peace in the heart there is contentment. As a onetime non-Mormon I found peace among some of the greatest people in the world, Non-Mormons and Mormons alike. Mrs. Lilac Holman Dear Editor: It is real sad when some one has to castigate and throw doubts, shadows and tell outright lies about our students of the Delta High School. Especially when they don't have the intestinal fortitude to sign their own name so they can be properly informed. The vast majority of students in Delta are fine, dedicated, morally clean, hard working students who have high ideals and are interested in getting a good education. Oh yes, we have, our goof-off s, but every generation (including mineandyours) has had them. They make it tough because we don't know just how to deal with them. We're not united. Too many adults don't realize that they are to give advice, direction, encouragement and dicipline to our youth, instead of nothing but criticism. To blame our athletic department depart-ment for hurting our students is surely the height of the ridiculous. Our coaches are two of the best known high school coaches in the Western States as men of good character who develop desire and good citizenship in their athletes. The athletic program develops school spirit and desire to excel, and certainlv both of our coaches are masters at this. Of course we have our problems, (plenty of them) but let's go along with the author who wrote something some-thing like this, "Lord, don't give me problems to match my ability, but give me ability to solve my problems." Let's not blame our kids for our inadequacies. Ben Robison Dear Editors: During the last several days there has been much controversy con cerning the anonymous letter written writ-ten in the Chronicle, that we, the lunch ladies of the Delta Jr.-Sr. High School decided we would like to make our comments; and we will be proud to sign our names. We feel if anyone is qualified to judge our students, we are. We know and admire them all. We have around 500 students each day going through the lunch line. We find them to be very polite, po-lite, neat in appearance, and as a whole, very happy and pleasant. Of course there are a very few that could use a few lessons in mannrs, but there is a very small percent for such a large amount of students If our students are as immoral as this woman's letter stated, how KRAFT Macaroni and Cheese Dinners make quick school lunchesl lap ikve it J To Speak at Stake Quarterly Confab A member of the First Council of Seventy of the LDS Church, Elder Marion D.
