According t0 County Agent Marven Ogden, tnat is tne timely spring reminder utah state University Extension Dairyman John Barnard urges be relayed to dairymen in the county who are concerned with Mastitis. Stress from any change aggravates aggra-vates the problem. Montana studies stu-dies have shown that spring is the worst season for flare-ups. Much difficulty can result from cows laying lay-ing on cold damp ground and from running and bucking, as they are inclined to do when first given the freedom of a pasture. Surprisingly, the Montana studies showed that cold winter months had the least incidence of Mastitis, Mr. Barnard said. Mastitis, he warned is no joking matter. It is now costing the nation's na-tion's dairymen about one-half billion dollars, or nearly thirty dollars dol-lars per cow. Treatment costs, including in-cluding veterinary and medicine, are only a small part, when you consider the larger cost from wasted wast-ed feed, loss of production and necessary replacements. An extension circular "Manage Milking Practices for More Profit" stresses that proper herd management manage-ment by the dairy farmer has a great influence on the control of Mastitis. baby of Salt Lake spent the weekend week-end with her mother.
