WHITE, Pastor. ii 4 Memorial Day Honored The Park City Post of the American Legion paid its tribute to the honored dead of all wars of the past on Monday, May 30th. The national colors flew at half mast at sunrise. The ceremonies was conducted by the post commander, the post chaplain having offered the opening prayer giving thanks to Almighty God for the peace which abides in our land. The Auxiliary members having prepared pre-pared a floral wreath made of Legion poppies, the same was deposited at the base of the flagstaff with appropriate ceremonies. These poppies may fade, but the spirit of which they are the symbol will endure to the end of time. The memorial prayer was offered by the post commander, then came taps ending the ceremonies. The Legion post wishes to thank Williard Bircumshaw for painting the flag pole; Mrs. John Cunningham for preparing the floral offering, the members mem-bers who acted as a color guard. We wish to especially thank Wid Bircumshaw Bircum-shaw and William Sullivan for the splendid performance of the re-echoing taps sounded. We acknowledge the services ser-vices rendered by Vern L. Mills and his father, Sam Mills, in preparing, planting and fertilizing the ex-service men's plot of ground in the City cemetery. There is a gaod promise of a stand of grass on the plot this year. W. Doubtful Doubt-ful souls look with more envy on his present well managed business than on his prospects of becoming a gold tyroon. We admire the spirit of the three former members of the Idle Hour Club who prefer to take what they can get and pay their own way if humanly possible. pos-sible. At the risk of public censure, it is our duty to report that after a day's personal per-sonal investigation, the demonstration in front of the relief office recently appeared ap-peared unjustified. There is no one in this community who would sit by and do nothing while children are going hungry, but when Inquiry into the causes of the demonstration fails to reveal a single such case, it is well to remember the fable of the boy who cried Wolf. This column would be glad to be corrected on this matter if we can be proved wrong, and to issue a public apology. Certainly the citizens of Park City, to say nothing of the regularly Instituted government relief agencies, are not so callous as to need the threat cf mob violence to awaken them to the duty of caring for anyone actually destitute. des-titute. Softball teams numbers three and six, which this column picked to finish in the socord division are tied for the lea gue lead, with two victories and no defeats. However, we are forced to stick with our original predictions. We're not going fishing over the week end, but will be glad to receive trout as a gift from anyone who catches more than they can use. About the mid dle of July well venture forth and catch our own. It takes a better fisherman fish-erman than we to even cover the bottom of the basket when the streams are In this condition. ! Deceased had been employed in the mines of this city for the past twenty years, and was well known In our com-munlty. com-munlty. ! Surviving are a brother, Henry Knight of Park City, and two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Cuillard of Park City and Mrs. Emma Felts of Mariposa, California. 1 Funeral services were held this afternoon after-noon at the First Ward L. D. S. chapel, Bishop John Holland, officiating. Letter Number Six (Continued from Page One) party is written In the sorry mess of Johnson's and Grant's and Harding's administrations, McKinley's administration, administra-tion, tariff scandles, Star Route frauds, Credit Mobllier frauds, fifty thousand men dead in the Spanish war, because of the rotten food frauds, (probably five times as many as were killed and died cf wounds from battles.) But why go on? A book could be written a huge one, abont the incompetency and general dema"v;;ery of the Democratic party; and a :r,ach larger book could be written about the dishonesty and general dem-agceuery dem-agceuery cf the Republican party. We can dismiss the Socialist and Communist parties and the Nazi and Fascist in a few words. The Socialists and Communists believe in destroying ail wealth, so that all may be poor, and thereby "equal." The philosophy of the Nazi and Fascist is that the great mass of the population, or ninety-five per cent of the population, are fools and must be boused around like a bunch of small kids In the third grade. They hold that liberty is not fit for the people, peo-ple, and is a daneerous thing for the people to play with. Communism and Socialism and Nazism and Faclsm are for backward, poverty stricken, peoples, who are taught to be warlike, in order to take their minds off of their poverty and misery. Now, what are we to do about facing square around. Well, as I see it, a new party must be formed, or an old party reformed. No use to try to work through: the Democratic party, and all other parties except the Republican party are Just Jokes. If the words "Republican Party" did not stink to high heaven of "loot" on a grand scale, the Republican party could be reorganized and washed with soap, lye and carbolic acid and made the nucleus of a good, sound, progressive, pro-gressive, business man's party, to include all Intelligent farmers, business meai, professional men, and all others who have brains enough to understand a little of primary economics. The Republican party is already in existence and has an organization, and it takes time to form a new party and a new organization and get it to functioning func-tioning well. It is a great opportunity for the best brains of the Republican party to consider. The Republican party has always contained more brains and more intelligence and more thieves, and rascals, and grafters and corruption in general than the Democratic party. Would it be too much to ask the Republican Re-publican party to turn the rascals out? If they will do this, or if they can do it, we have a ready made organization that can be the means of multiplying ; wealth five fold and distributing it to I everyone, and all within a lifetime, or less. CHAS. MOORE. with molasses sauce, or with sugar and cream. On Ironing Day On ironing days wnen you have a great number of woolen garments to press, instead of laboring over them with an iron, do this: Place each garment gar-ment on a hanger by Itself and then suspend it from a rod over a boiler full of steaming water on the range. Wrinkles disappear like magic, and all you have to do is press the pleats and creases. Half a dozn garments can be hung above the boiler at the same time. The Sewing Room If you cannot get the right colors for birds or flowers in mercerized floss for your fancywork, try to use mercerized thread. Use two strands through the needle eye as you would with floss to keep it from twisting. You will not be able to work quite so fast with thread, but you will find it 6erves satisfactory otherwise. Weekly Scrapbook Week's Best Recipe Apple Slump Pare and slice apples, sweeten to taste, add cinnamon and a little salt. Prepare a crust as follows: 2 cups flour; 2 level teaspoons baking powder; 1 teaspoon salt, sifted tcgetlier. Mix thoroughly with 2 tablespoons shortening, wet with milk or water until you have a soft dough; place over apples. ap-ples. Make three or four cuts in top to allow steam to escape, and bake. Serve Kitchen Kinks Left-over rice blends well with cooked meat and can be shaped into small cakes, browned In bacon fat and topped with tomato or mushroom sauce. . . Grape Juice sauce makes a pleasant change when served over baked, spiced or cottage pudding. . . . Beet skins can be removed quickly if beets are put in very hot water for a minute or two. Drain off hot water and quickly place beets in cold water. Despicable Thievery " There Is some low-down sneak-thief in our city, who if apprehended, should be given all he deserves, and some added for good measure. This particular "low-down" "low-down" last Monday night stole the flowers placed on the graves of the Mawhinney plot in the Glenwood Cemetery. Ceme-tery. We have a suspicion who the miserable mis-erable miscreant is. and if our suspicions can be substantiated, publicity will be given in addition to a sound thrashing. HCGH MAWHINNET. |
