Show PAGE SIX THE PARK RECORD Thursday, June 2. 1933 Stone of III Luck There are one or two theories that opals are unlucky, says a writer in London Answers Magazine. One is that this precious stone is affected by chances of temperature, expand ing with heat and contracting with cold. When it expands, it forces open the setting so that, when it contracts, con-tracts, it is apt to drop out and get lost. Another theory is that the tone, being comparatively soft, is Dt to lose its color by the surface wearing. It is curious to note that in the olden days the opal was sup posed to bring its owner good luck. Derivation of Word "Budget" The word "budget" is derived from the old French "bougette," meaning a wallet. The use of the word in its present sense is from the custom of bringing into the house of commons all the papers pertaining to matters of expenditure and laying them on the table. This placed him in an embarrassing embar-rassing and uncomfortable position because some of his officers were longer in the service and thus above him in seniority. Dog Man's Friend, but No one likes to quarrel with the statement that the dog is man's best friend. In fact, we all like to believe it without question. But neighborhood "dogs that insist on staining prized ornamental evergreens ever-greens and shrubbery certainly do put a heavy strain on friendship. Home owners have faced this problem sadly, angrily and ineffectuallyuntil inef-fectuallyuntil recently a very simple solution came to light. All that you do is spray the lower branches of your evergreens and shrubs with a little nicotine sulphate sul-phate mixed in water. It's harmless harm-less to plants harmless to the dogs and brings a tremendous relief to frayed tempers. You see, the desired result comes because dogs do not like the nicotine sulphate sul-phate odor and give a wide berth to any spot where that odor is found.
