Aspen, maple and willow wil-low seem to be preferred in the order named. The animals seem to have a tendency to eat aquatic plants in the summer time, when tree cutting is at a minimum. Beavers Beav-ers in the wild cut on an average of two trees every three days. A small aspen, one inch in diameter, is enough food for a beaver for a day. Beavers are not sagacious wood cutters. cut-ters. They waste much timber. Giraffes Temperamental Giraffes are among the most costly cost-ly animals in captivity, not so much because they are scarce, but because be-cause they are temperamental. They are delicate and nervous. Necessary Nec-essary surgical operations can be performed on many wild animals, but seldom on giraffes. They are so timid that they show alarm at the least cause. They have been known to drop dead when their keepers approached to give them medicine. Snake Bite Poisonous snakes do not discharge dis-charge all of their venom in one bite. It is therefore possible for the snake to inflict dangerous wounds even three or four times consecutively, con-secutively, though in each case there would be less poison than in the one preceding. The amount of poison depends on the vigor and the size of the snake and the length of time that the poison has been accumulating. Esperanto Esperanto is an artificial language devised by Dr. L. Zamennof, a Russian, Rus-sian, who adopted the pseudonym "Dr. Esperanto" (1887). The vocabulary vocab-ulary is based as far as possible upon words common to the chief European languages, and sounds peculiar to any one language are eliminated. The spelling is phonetic, and the accent is always on the last syllable but one of a word. Ways of Using Snuff There are two ways of using snuff. The fashionable way of the Victorian Victo-rian period was to pinch up a little between the thumb and forefinger and draw it into the nostrils with sharp inhalations. In a few minutes min-utes it produces a ticklish sensation sensa-tion which is rumored to be highly gratifying. "Dipping" is the other method. Theological Doctrines Consubstantiation is the doctrine that the body and blood of Christ are co-existent in and with the bread and wine of the Eucharist, though the latter retain their form and nature. na-ture. Transubstantiation is the doctrine doc-trine that the substance of the bread and wine becomes the body and blood of Christ. The composer is represented in gilded bronze, playing a violin, while behind him rises a pergola of white marble from which figures in relief seem to break, as if from the waves of the Danube, and to dance to his famous waltz. Other parts of Vienna too have memorials of the life of Strauss. His birthplace is 15 Lerch-enfelderstrasse, Lerch-enfelderstrasse, and the cottage in which he composed his first waltz, at the age of 6, stands at Salmanns-dorf, Salmanns-dorf, near the city. Biggest Cinnamon Fire The biggest cinnamon fire ever recorded was built by Nero as part of the funeral rites for his wife, Poppaea. It is said that he burned more than a whole year's importation impor-tation on that one occasion. Compared Com-pared to this funeral pyre, the one built to honor ' Sylla, the Roman general, was indeed a meager blaze for only 210 "burthens of spice" were consumed in it. A "burthen" was as much as a beast of burden could carry. Switzerland's Languages Switzerland has three officially recognized languages: German, French, and Italian. German is spoken by 70.9 per cent of the people, peo-ple, French by 21.2 per cent and Italian by 6.2 per cent. The remaining re-maining 1.7 per cent speak the Romansch tongue. This language, formed from the everyday Latin of the Roman soldiers, prevails in some parts of the large canton of the Grisons. Macaroni Chinese Invention Facts that are hard to believe should lead off with this one: Macaroni Mac-aroni is a Chinese invention. This paste, which we associate with gondolas gon-dolas and balcony serenades was originally a product of those clever clev-er Orientals across the Pacific. It was introduced into Europe by way of Germany and did not find a home and fame in Italy until some time later. Capital of Uruguay The capital of Uruguay is known as the South American Lido. It has a population of two-thirds of a million. It lakes its name from the cerro behind it. A sailor, who espied es-pied it in 1726, cried out: "Monte video!" (I see a mountain.) It is one of the most beautiful capitals in the western hemisphere. It is a city of wealth. Mnemonics The word mnemonics is derived from a Greek word meaning "to remember" and is used chiefly for devices to aid the memory. Some of these take the form of rhymes, like the well known "Thirty days hath September," or "In 1492, Co-ufnbus Co-ufnbus crossed the ocean blue"; there are various other forms of mnemonics. Masoola, a Boat. A masoola is a boat common on the east coast of India, adapted to be beached on the surf-beaten shore. The planks are sewed together with coir, over wads of the same material. mate-rial. The boats are 30 to 35 feet long and are rowed by 12 men, oars double banked, and a steersman with an oar at the stern. FIFTHS CSS K3. 252 The CLAY MAS It "I shall be a little late tonight." Merrick told his wife as he threw out the clutch and slipped the gear shift into low, "Oh you'll be late? How late, dear?" she asked with the color leaping into her usually pale cheeks. Impatiently he held his foot on the clutch. "Oh a couple of hours or maybe three. I have to drive over to Speedwell's after business and it may take me some time there." Nora nodded. "All righty, I'll look for you when I see you dear." Until he had driven five miles Merrick thought nothing of his wife nor her slight flush nor her words. Now, however, they returned re-turned to him poignantly. Why should she want to know just how late he would be? What was she going to do with the time? Why had the color sprung into her cheeks so quickly?. Was it possible pos-sible that there was some one she would see in that time? Nora was always busy all day between superintending su-perintending the house, looking after the children and giving her attention to certain social amenities amen-ities that could not be overlooked. He remembered suddenly how Nora had smiled at young Mills at the last Country club dinner. Was it possible could they he found himself driving on with set lips and glassy eyes. His Nora! As the day passed Merrick managed man-aged to call to mind some dozen cases where Nora had seemed more than slightly interested in some man other than her husband. hus-band. At closing time he had worked l.imse1 up into such a frenzy about the whole thing that he drove straight home instead of going to Speedwell's. He was home a half hour earlier than usual. Minette, the maid, was at the door and her eyes frowned as she saw him. "Madame is not expecting you yet " she said, falteringly, in reply to his inquiry. "No well, I'll go right on up," he said trying to be casual. "But it would be best if you " began Minette. Without reply he went up the staircase, past her, the veins in his throat swelling uncomfortably. Throwing open the door of her room, he stood on the threshold, glaring. There was a sudden yelp hardly hard-ly human but he recognized the tone as that of his wife. And his wife's face gray as ash! "Well?" he sr'd harshly. "Oh, Merrick, I thought you going go-ing to be late," she said lamely. "There is so little time during the day and I thought this would be a good chance to use my clay mask stuff." And Nora wondered why it was that with the crumbling clay on her face her husband took her into his arms and affectionately caressed her, "It just shows," she told herself her-self later, "that men don't care a rap for looks because who could be pretty in a clay mask!" wearing mileas mileage. notches kidding. ski THK VOICE OF FIRKSTONZ featuring Richard Crooks and Margaret Speaks and the 7-piece Firestone Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Alfred Wallenstein, Monday eveniniis over the Nationwide N. Thinking about one thing while doing another causes accidents. Flying around a corner in a car and honking all the way doesn't relieve your conscience if you hit someone. Dirt on lenses may reduce the light intensity of automobile headlights head-lights from 10 to 50 per cent. In addition to glare caused by scattering scat-tering of the light beam. On long trips, get out of the car frequently and "stretch your legs." Tired muscles react slowly. Speed must be consistent with volume of traffic, condition of road and time of day, even if laws allow al-low a greater speed. Never drive so that you cannot stop quickly enough to meet any emergency. According to scientific tests, the ear responds to a warning faster than the eye does. Thus, a bell, whistle or horn causes a driver to put on the brake faster than when he sees a signal. The most important safety device de-vice on any motor car is the driver, safety officials toint out. Even the "self-starter" needs a foot to start it, and the best brakes re-ciuire re-ciuire quick toe pressure to stop the car. A Happy Home Happy is the house that shelters a friend!
