Show Pleasant Grove Review - Thursday, December 16, 2004 - Page 8 Lehi director invites seniors to center Brenda Armstrong Two local senior centers will be temporarily closed during the holiday season to give its directors a short vacation at the end of the year. Director Jan Jonsson, has invited all seniors in the area to use the Lehi Senior Center during this time. The Jacobs Senior Center Cen-ter in Pleasant Grove will be closed from Dec. 18 and will not reopen until Jan. 3. The American Fork Senior Center will also be closed from Dec. 23 to Jan 1. "Typically every year, the senior center shuts down a week before Christmas and does not reopen until the first of the year," said Frank Mills, Pleasant Grove city administrator. "People who normally use the center aren't there during the holidays and are with family." The Jacobs Senior Center Cen-ter has traditionally closed since 1988 in order to service serv-ice many types of private gatherings at this time. Groups reserve the center for parties, weddings and other types of events. "Our center is rented out almost every day and evening during the holiday season," said Ruth Has-sonfritz, Has-sonfritz, director at the Center. "We close every year to accommodate these events. Our seniors usually usual-ly leave for the holidays and go to be with their families." The center provides multiple activities for seniors sen-iors such as ceramics, bingo, exercising and quilting. quilt-ing. On average, 45 seniors eat lunch at the center five times a week. "I come here because I don't want to stay home," said Celia R. Arnold, almost 95. "I love to see all of my friends and I come here to eat lunch. Most of the time all of the food, except the hot dogs, 'is quite good." Celia lives with her daughter and son-in-law and plans to spend time with her other daughter during the holidays. The American Fork Senior Center serves lunch five times a week to 25 to 75 senior residents. They also provide violin, art and ceramic lessons. "We close every year around this time," said Lucille Wootton, director of the American Fork Center. "We have a large meeting room with hardwood floors and we take this time to refinish the floors." Lehi's Senior Center will remain open during the holidays except Dec. 23, 24 and Dec. 31. Jan Jonsson has offered an open invitation to all sen iors throughout the area to come and use their facilities facili-ties while the others are closed for the season. "I couldn't close the center. cen-ter. Some of them, it's their only hot meal of the day," she said. There are 40 to 60 seniors who usually have lunch at the Lehi center. cen-ter. Paul Jonsson, another senior who frequently visits vis-its the Jacobs Center, plans on going over to the Lehi Center during the holidays. "I live in Lehi, but come to the Pleasant Gryve Center Cen-ter because all , of my friends are here," said Paul Jonsson. The senior center in Lehi is located at 123 N. Center Street. Those seniors sen-iors who would like. to eat lunch at this facility during dur-ing the holiday season, the center phone number 768-7165. 768-7165. There is round-trip transportation available. PG gears up for winterf Brenda Armstrong The Pleasant Grove Street Department urges residents to remember safety measures meas-ures during the winter. "We are usually out plowing plow-ing because the roads are slick," said John Goodman, street department employee. "We urge the public to travel 100 yards behind the plows in order to get the needed traction trac-tion for their vehicle. It is not safe to quickly pull ahead of or get in front of the snowplows." The six trucks and 10 licensed snowplow drivers service more than 100 miles of road in the Pleasant Grove area. Each driver has a specified spec-ified route and is on call 24 hours a day. Main roads, schools areas and bus routes are given first plowing priority. Some of these areas take three to four passes by the plow in order to clear the road "We ask that residents be patient and understand there are seven local schools that need to be serviced before 6 a.m.." sai t street 'departmprn?.PhilliP3: mi I There nance that in is also i place vehiclealongswf! a a--to 6 a.m. fh,m n7' March 15.VinlJmNov-lto employe 1 c ordil SDPrift.: 15.
