The Vikings defeated Cyprus 38-27 Dec. 7, but lost their next two games. On Friday,. Springville bounced back from a 10-point deficit to down Pleasant Grove 54-48. In a late afternoon game Saturday, Canyon View defeated the Vikings 50-31. Against the pirates, Kailee May Jed Pleasant Grove with 12 points while Monique Smith chipped in another 11. Although the Pirates outscored the Vikings 7-6 in the first quarter, Pleasant Grove slipped ahead in the next period. By halftime, Pleasant Grove had a 17-15 lead. Both the Vikings and the Pirates scored seven points in the third quarter. Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove finally pulled away in the final period by outscoring Cyprus 14-8. Rebound battle The first four minutes of the Springville game went down as a scoreless rebounding battle, mainly between Viking Katie Dixon and Red Devil Cori Nel- son.The scoreless stalemate finally ended with Smith hitting a foul shot. Stealing the ball, Springville's Jessica Bradford Brad-ford passed to Nelson for a layup that, sparked the Red Devils into moving ahead 9-1. 9-1. Dixon scored the first Viking field goal just before the quarter break. During the second quarter, quar-ter, Viking Chelsea Yarn came out hot. Sinking a layup, she went on to score eight of the first 10 Viking points to lead them ahead 13-9. Ashley Brekson hit a jumper to open the Red Devil scoring for the quarter. quar-ter. Nelson evened the game at 13, but Maegan Johnson put the Vikings ahead 15-13. 15-13. Through Nelson's foul shooting, Springville tied the score at 16, but Viking Aimee Dorais hit a trey at halftime to put the Vikings back ahead 19-16. The third quarter opened with May hitting a 17-foot shot, but Pleasant Grove's 21-16 lead came under immediate attack, led by Bradford and Nelson. They brought Springville within 20-21. Johnson thereupon sank an inside shot that opened an 11-1 scoring run for the Vikings. At the end of the scoring spree, Yarn got flagrantly fouled while sinking a shot. Through producing three points in her attempted four-point play, she netted a 32-21 lead. While stealing the ball, Bradford produced a three-point three-point play that opened a 9-3 rally for Springville. By the quarter's end, Pleasant Grove led by just 35-32. The fourth quarter unfolded on an ominous note for the Vikings. Erek-son Erek-son and Nelson became more aggressive in their assaults on the Viking lead. Shots from Johnson, May and Smith kept Pleasant Grove narrowly ahead for a little while. Late in the period, Bradford Brad-ford made five unanswered points that put Springville ahead 46-44. Two Dixon foul shots evened the game at 46, but before the Vikings could pull back out in front, Bradford broke the tie. With one minute left, Alisa Sampson tied the game at 48. After Nelson broke the tie, Nicole Morin hit two foul shots to secure the game for Springville. Yarn tallied 15 points to become Pleasant Grove's highest scorer for the night. Dorais added 8 points while Sampson and May each made 6 points. Canyon View gets quick start Pleasant Grove didn't play well in the first quarter quar-ter of the Canyon View game. A Hailee Truman basket sent the Falcons out to a 14-0 lead. The Vikings' two points that quarter came on foul f hots from Kristy Giles and Sampson. In the second quarter, the Canyon View lead grew to 20-2 on two straight Ashley Gentry treys. Rebounding a Yarn free throw, Sampson sank a shot that opened a 14-4 scoring run for the Vikings. No sooner did Yarn put Pleasant Grove within 16-24 16-24 when a Truman field goal extended it. A Sampson foul shot made it to 17-26 at the end of the quarter. In the third period, the Falcons held the Vikings to three points. Trie UC Strikers 90 team lost a heart-breaker heart-breaker on the first day against Spart 90 Gold 1-0 on a penalty kick, and then were soundly beaten by Southern Utah Premier 6-0. However, by the final day the Strikers were playing much more relaxed and felt j: ee; they had something to prove. By Dean Von Memmott Sports Correspondent The Pleasant Grove wrestling team got off to a strong start in Region 7 action Dec. 8, opening with a 51-15 pasting of Mountain View. The meet opened with Viking Gehrhardt Vuksinik grabbing a 7-1 lead over Corbin Frost in the 145 weight class. The Bruin took a 2-0 lead on a takedown. Mitchell escaped, then took his opponent oppo-nent down. Though Morrill did escape to tie the match at three, Sanderson took him down again and went on to outlast the Bruin 5-4. Before the first period of his 171 weight class match ended, Viking Kolby Hilton pinned Derrick Shumway. Ben Carson got a victory by default and Teddy Owens defeated Jesse Fisher on a technical fall. However, Tua Fonohcma snapped the string of Viking victories by sticking Jim Argyle in the first period peri-od of their 275 weight class match. The next Bruin victory came in the 112 match. Viking Colt Thaxton built up a 7-3 lead over Bryce Flores. The momentum quickly turned against Thaxton. Once he had pulled within 6-7 on a three-point near fall, Flores quickly outmaneuvcred the Viking, defeating him 11-7. Taking down his 119-pound 119-pound opponent, Garrick Gaffner, Viking Kawai Goodman ended their match before it could enter its second minute. After the Bruins had forfeited for-feited at 125, Mountain View's McKay Upstill secured a 5-0 lead over his 130-pound opponent, Shane Fowles. The Viking battled within 4-5 but was eventually eventu-ally pinned. Taking a 5-0 lead in his 135 weight class match, Viking Grant Gagon quickly defeated Austin Boles on a technical fall. For the final match of the evening, Kevin Bauer, a 140-pound Bruin, took Jake Woodhouse down. Wood-house Wood-house battled Bauer to ties at two and four. Pulling ahead 6-4, Woodhouse never trailed again. In tournaments over the weekend, Pleasant Grove posted a 5-3 record at the Wasatch Duals over a Heber City.
