Caleb Warnock Utah Valley staff Utah's largest advocacy group for motorized access of public lands has won an appeal to the Forest Service Ser-vice that will require the Uinta National Forest to reopen 20 miles of motorized motor-ized trails in American Fork Canyon that were closed last year. Paul Mortensen, attorney attor-ney for Utah Shared Access Alliance, said the group had tried twice to protest the trails closure, "but our comments were rejected by the Forest Service." Ser-vice." When the Forest Service Ser-vice closed the trails, located in Tibbie Fork in American Fork Canyon, without accepting public comment, the alliance sued in federal district court. As a result of the suit, the Forest Service and the alliance reached an agree ment allowing two trails to remain open this summer sum-mer while the alliance appealed the closure to the Forest Service administrative admin-istrative appeal office. "We filed the lawsuit because we got ignored, but we were serious about this," he said. On Sept. 1 that office ruled that Uinta National Forest managers did not follow the law when they . closed the trails, Mortensen said. The ruling rul-ing should mean all 20 miles of closed trails will be reopened until the Forest For-est Service can revise its management plan for the area and accept public comments. "It forces the Forest Service to go back to square one," Mortensen said. "We hope they open the trails soon." Uinta National Forest spokeswoman Loyal Clark to discuss thpio.,. tf aA 4.1..
