Show New Utah - Thursday, April 1 , 2004 - Page 12 UVSC to host 'Deaf Studies Today' With the largest number of deaf students in Utah and over 300 American Sign Language (ASL) and Deaf Studies students, Utah Valley Val-ley State College is hosting Deaf Studies scholars, business busi-ness professionals and entertainers from all over the world to attend the first Deaf Studies Today conference confer-ence April 12 to 14. The conference con-ference is themed, "A Kaleidoscope Kalei-doscope of Knowledge, Learning and Understanding," Understand-ing," representing the diversity diver-sity of ideas and approaches within the interdisciplinary field of Deaf Studies. "There was a need for this type of conference because there is nothing like it in the country," said Byran Eldredge, UVSC ASL and Deaf Studies program coordinator and co-chair of the event. "We decided UVSC could fill that void." The conference kicks off on Monday, April 12, with an evening reception and will be followed by various keynote speakers, paper presentations and performances perform-ances for the duration of the conference. Wednesday, April 14, will feature a play performed in old style signing, gestures and mime without vocal narration. The two-man play titled, "The Last Con," features internationally renowned actors, Oscar-nominated Oscar-nominated Howie Seago and Nat Wilson. Deaf Studies Today 2004 will also feature the premiere pre-miere of a documentary film, "Audism Unveiled," produced by students and faculty in the Deaf Studies program at Gallaudet University Uni-versity in Washington D.C. The conference has already generated publicity among the Deaf community both locally and internationally. "The fact' is," said Eldredge, "everybody involved with Deaf Studies knows who we are now when they didn't six months ago." There will also be a number num-ber of events that are free and open to the public. Throughout the conference there will be several booths and exhibitors set up in the UVSC Sorensen Student Center. In addition to the booths, there will be speeches speech-es open to the public. Tuesday, Tues-day, April 13, will feature Dr. Harlan Lane and Wednesday, April 14, Dr. Benjamin Bahan, the first Deaf Ph.D. to address audiences audi-ences at UVSC. A detailed schedule of events and speaker biographies biogra-phies is available at www.deafstudies.org. Girls Scouts to The nursing shortage is so severe that the University Uni-versity of Utah College of Nursing and the Utah Nurses Association (UNA) believe it's never too early to introduce children to the profession. Eighty-eight Girl Scouts (grades 3-12) from the Wasatch Front will be attending a workshop at the college to earn a nursing nurs-ing exploration patch. Girl Scouts in other states have developed a similar patch, but this is the first of its kind in Utah. Activities will include a tour of the college and 25-minute 25-minute workshops on nursing programs and specialties, prerequisites to pursuing a nursing degree, how body systems work, and equipment and supplies used by nurses. The event is sponsored by explore nursing the Gamma Rho chapter of Sigma Theta Tau at the college,, in cooperation with Girl Scouts of Utah and UNA. Utah ranks third in the nation for fewest nurses, with only 595 nurses per 100,000 residents. It is estimated that there are about 1,000 nursing positions posi-tions unfilled in Utah. 30' x 40' x ir? William Johnson, Regional Food Bank Resource Development Coordinator, said community commu-nity members' generosity propelled this year's Food Drive to success. "We had an overwhelming overwhelm-ing response, so many people peo-ple want to help," said Johnson, who invites community com-munity members to tour the Food Bank to see first hand what a difference their generosity makes.
