The first, and the one I belong to goes something like: I will never go rock climbing. The second, and more extreme group, are the ones who watch this movie and are driven to this point: I will never stop rock climbing. This is an unbelievably true story of friendship, hardship hard-ship and determination. This movie is done in a semi-documentary style. The narrationinterviews are told by the actual people that this story happened to, Joe Simpson and Simon Yates. What we actually get to watch is an actionadventure actionadven-ture movie with two stunt double actors (Nicholas Aaron, Richard Hawking, Brendan Mackey) who do an incredible job of true-life portrayals of exuberance, fatigue, regret and exhaustion. exhaus-tion. The story involves two young friends, Joe and Simon, who climb the Siula Grande in Peru, a summit that no one had ever climbed. It was a treacherous and exciting prospect to be the first to actually summit this great peak. The two hiked Agents of 2003 r Fay Jones Larry Vest Agents of 2003 Top Buyers Agents of -,.-."v S . They wTere able to make the summit in two days, the descent however, was to prove much more harrowing. On the third day as they descended, Joe made a crucial cru-cial misstep; falling, he severely broke his leg, shattering shat-tering his knee. At that altitude, and with so little provisions, a broken leg is tantamount to death. However, Simon figured out a way that the two of them could descend one at a time, tethered together by a 300-foot 300-foot rope. Little by little they both descended until at one point, unknowingly, Simon lowered Joe off a cliff. Waiting for the rope to go loose, and slowly being pulled off the mountain, Simon is faced with the dilemma of being pulled off himself, or cutting the rope. Finally, painfully, Simon cuts his friend free. The most amazing part of the story is not about loss, however. It is about determination deter-mination and friendship as Joe actually lived and was able to pull himself back to base camp after four days of painfully dragging himself forward. The scenes of delirium deliri-um are a bit off-center, but well worth your time. The Best Two Years Rating: 2 stars These are amazing times. For those of us who are Latter-day Saints, or for those of us who live among them, we are well aware of then-peculiarities, then-peculiarities, their quirks and their unique worldview. The times are amazing because for the first time, in any real, recognizable format, for-mat, we are seeing multiple interpretations of LDS life told through the medium of film. The Best Two Years is a valiant effort on showing the amazing sacrifices made by LDS missionaries, boys really, who go out and teach their faith, while gaining the confidence that what they teach is the truth. The movie centers on a missionary apartment with two sets of companions, each with the prefix of Elder. They are Elder Van Pelt (Cameron Hopkin) and Elder Johnson (David Nib-ley), Nib-ley), two companions who get along fairly well and are "doing the work." i Carl Thurgood i G en Taylor Heather Osmond -- 1 Fay Jones J . ' 4 t In ! lit llll ll Sl'zanne Richmond - - - Rob McGo ern Elder Rogers (KC Clyde) has been "out" for so long he has fewer months than his new companion, Elder Calhoun Cal-houn (Kirby Heyborne) has years. The story follows Elder Rogers who has lost his wall to be on a mission. He spends his days thinking think-ing about what is going on at home and taking pictures of the breathtaking Dutch landscape. ' He has been assigned to teach and train a new Elder coming into the mission, a greenie named Elder Calhoun. Elder Calhoun is as green as one can get, writing writ-ing down everything his companion says and asking for permission to go to the store with another missionary. mission-ary. However Elder Calhoun Cal-houn begins to see that Elder Rogers is missing some pretty key elements to the successful life of a missionary mis-sionary and he takes the lead in bringing his companionship com-panionship back to its full potential. The movie is lightheart-ed lightheart-ed and enjoys its subject matter. It never takes itself too seriously, to its detriment detri-ment at key, spiritual moments. For anyone who has ever been on a mission much of this will ring true. The Best Two Years is a humorous, and fairly accurate, look at WW WW 2003 Team Players s' m - . However, differently dif-ferently from other LDS movies up to this point, it seems to only be applicable to those who are currently members of the LDS church. It does not show the silly, often ludicrous side of church life, like the Home Teachers and it doesn't take itself seriously enough to truly investigate the issues of faith, trust and duty as did Brigham City. It is somewhere in the middle. The Best Two Years is a fun look at LDS missionary life. The important thing to remember is that we are just embarking on a new age of film for the LDS people. peo-ple. These are just the first of many amazing movies to come. While you may not appreciate the content or subject, you have to admire the courage it takes to do something wholly new, and not completely appreciated by the world. A unique view of the world seen through LDS eyes. Take a moment and go see The Best Two Years, you might find that it turns out to be the best two hours of your weekend. 1979 - 200 4 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE f 1 . f I ' i .
