With about five minutes left in the game, a hands call went against Carbon. Chantal Cowley then scored on the penalty kick, securing secur-ing the win for the Vikings. "This young team just continues to get better," said coach Jose Marzan. "It was a good move to switch Chantal Cowley from fullback full-back to forward. Amy Renolds is also proving herself her-self as she moves forward as a defender and scores." Scoring goals for the Vikings against Granger were Cowley with three, Reynolds with two, and Glazier, Elsey and Elaina Daily each came through with one. . M - ' - - . . . ..,.. ' . '' ' - -. . - " The Viking soccer team had a busy week, winning two games and losing to state finisher Timpview. Even though it was a disappointing dis-appointing loss to the Thun-derbirds, Thun-derbirds, Marzan continues to be enthusiastic about the direction the Vikings are taking. One of the newcomers newcom-ers to the team, Whitney Fox, was the only one able to score against Timpview. The junior varsity team is also doing well this year, getting a 3-1 win against Granger and also beating Timpview. The Vikings host Mountain Moun-tain View on Wednesday. Spikers finish third in t By Denise Honey Sports Correspondent The Pleasant Grove volleyball vol-leyball team finished third at the Tournament of Champions over the week- md at Highland High School. With only four days of practice after tryouts, the 'Hangs entered this event, 'hich included last year's 3A, 4A, and 5 A state -'tampions among a tough 5eld of 16 teams. The UHSAA approved !fe tournament as a "search study on rally oring. The tournament tas played with rally-d rally-d matches to 21 points, 5h the best three out of :,vc matches determining :he winner and the fifth Played to 15 points. The Vikings played eight JKAes and 39 games in three days. Leading the team in kills was Maren Honey with 57. Lindsay Durrant followed with 55, Jerilyn Cook with 32, Melanie Shoell with 31, and Jamie Kartchner with 29. The spikers still showed that they can win even after losing four of their six starters. "Our team just continues to get better and better," said Coach Marlyn Kartchner. In a four-team pool on Thursday, Pleasant Grove finished first competing against Provo, Clearfield and Viewmont. Friday they continued their winning streak, finishing fin-ishing first again after defeating Timpview, Timpanogos Tim-panogos and Highland in the second pool round. Despite efforts to make this a photocopy photo-copy of what happened the day before, Pleasant Grove couldn't come back from a 2-1 deficit. Lindsay Durrant finished fin-ished this tournament with 23 aces, while Gretchen Tullis had 16, Jamie Kartchner 14 and Maren Honey 12. The best defenders defend-ers in the tournament were Jamie Kartchner, passing 2.3 with 12 blocks, and Maren Honey, passing 2.1 with 10 blocks. Jamie Kartchner also led the team with 176 assists. The Vikings will have a week off and will take on Timpanogos again on Sept. 5. just before attending the uingham Tournament in Salt Lake City on the weekend. Varsity team members are seniors James Holmes and team captain Dallas Wright. Juniors include Chris Beagles and Ryan Robinson, sophomores are Ryan Bez-zant, Bez-zant, Steve Carter, Beau Deitlaf, Derrek Huff, Dane Jensen, Cody Lyndell, Brett Neilsen, Nick Proctor and Tyler Summer-hayes, Summer-hayes, with freshman Matt Hardman rounding out the group. "The Viking golf team has the potential to be one of the best golf teams in a long time, with returning 4A state champion Dane Jensen and three-year lettermen Dallas Dal-las Wright and James Holmes providing leadership," said Kurtz. "These three players should be some of the best golfers in the region." Providing additional team depth will be Chris Beagles, Steve Carter, Derrek Huff, Ryan Robinson and Tyler Summerhayes. Junior varsity team members are Ryan Bezzant, Beau Deitlaf, Cody Lundell, Brett Nielsen, Nick Proctor and Matt Hardman. "They will gain valuable experience that can be used for several years to come," Kurtz said. The team's goal is to qualify for the 4A ; state golf championship, which is scheduled for Oct. 8 and 9 at Wasatch State Park in ! Midway. The first region match is today at Old Mill Golf Course beginning at noon. Other dual competitions were scheduled for this week and continue through September. Flag FB, volleyball signups underway The Pleasant Grove Recreation department is conducting registration for flag football and volleyball at the community center now through Aug. 31 between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Flag football is for players play-ers in grades 3-6. The cost is $32 for grades 3 and 4, and $37 for grades 5 and 6. The volleyball program serves students in grades 3-8. 3-8. Novices will do the 5K run, 10 mile bike ride and 200 meter swim. Kids 12 and under will run one mile, do a five mile bike ride and 100 meter swim.
