Though the scoreboard showed a lopsided victory, tjie Vikings can take heart in several positives. , Things didn't look good early as they Vikings fumbled fum-bled away the football on their first possession of the game, however, thanks to tlu: Viking defense and a Timpview penalty, the T-I'.irds T-I'.irds also came up empty on their first drive. In the second quarter, Pleasant drove managed an impressive drive that ran out of gas just short of the goal line. Timpview recaptured possession of the ball after the Vikings failed to score on fourth down. On the T-Birds next possession, pos-session, they looked like a championship team as they drove the ball 84 yards for their second score of the night. The point after failed and Timpview held a seemingly comfortable 13-0 lead. Throwing deep into double coverage, a Timpview pass was first tipped by Russ Pattmi and then intercepted by junior cornerback Caleb Mutter. Kutter returned the ball to the Timpview 3-5 yard line. Again however. the offense could not find the end zone and Timpview rec-claimed rec-claimed the ball on their own 20 yard line after the Vikings turned the ball over on downs. The apparent strength of the Pleasant Grove team, the defense once again shut clown the highly touted Timpview offense, giving the Pleasant Grove offense one more chance at scoring before the half. This time the offense didn't did-n't disappoint as tailback Matt Mortensen put the team on his shoulders throughout the drive. Mortensen capped the drive with a three yard dive into the end zone to pull the Vikings to within seven points. The failed extra point kept the Vikings at that distance. The T-Birds finally got on track in the final minutes of the third quarter by kicking a 25 yard field goal as well as returning a Viking fumble fum-ble for a touchdown to push their lead to 23-6. i . Timpview took advantage advan-tage of a mis-thrown Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove pass that the T-Birds T-Birds intercepted to set up the final points of the game. With the T-Birds comfortably comfort-ably in front, Pleasant Grove took some measure of comfort in their solid defensive defen-sive play as well as glimpses of solid play in the future from the offense.
