Rocky Mountain Elementary celebrates ancient Greece The sixth grade at Rocky Mountain : Elementary held its Greek Festival Monday, Nov' 12. The students made posters of the Parthenon and: other: Greek sites and put them up on the walls in the ' front half of the gym. Activities included a mock trial as it would have occurred in. ancient Greece and skits ab6ut Greek gods and goddesses and other things, like the -Trojan Horse. The Trojan Horse was a shopping , cart , wrapped in brown paper, a neck made I of cardboard wrapped in brown paper, and the nose was a cardboard box. The gate on the shopping cart ( was wired open and a flap of ' brown paper covered the opening, concealing two Greek soldiers. 3 In the afternoon Jeanette 1 Mohson, the fifth and sixth i grade social studies special-e special-e ist, read a veteran's narra-1 narra-1 tive about a burial at sea to honor Veteran's Day. Many ( of the children still wore ( robes or garlands or other 1 Greek costume, and after Monson's reading they did t several rounds of foot races from one wall to the other and back again. Dacia Mumford, the fifth and 1 sixth grade Spanish immer-5 immer-5 sipn teacher, crowned the 1 w nners with crowns of p; per laurel leaves. Next the students raised ; tr e partition in the middle of the gym and LuAnn Albaugh, the sixth grade core teacher, stood in her purple robe back near the kitchen to judge the discus throw. Students lined up in groups to throw the discus. Some of the later groups discovered that they could get the discus closer if they flipped it along the floor rather than through the air. Monson joked that she was sure the ancient Greeks hadn't thrown the discus that way. The last event was the chariot races. One student would ride a flat plastic cart on four wheels and another would act as the horse, harnessed har-nessed by a jumprope around the waist. Monson asked two students to demonstrate, saying she wanted the racers to see what happened when the chariot went around the corners of the gym. The two made the first corner, with the chariot swinging wide. Halfway to the second corner the horse fell, then stood up to cheers. The rider also, raising the chariot above his head in triumph. Albaugh said she had been working with the students stu-dents about a month, beginning begin-ning with the mythology, to put the festival together, and Monson had been working work-ing with them about three weeks. Linda Gordon also worked on the festival. Red Ribbon Week begins at PGHS The Pleasant Grove High hool Red Ribbon Week is u iderway at the school.
