Hill struck out the first batter and then got a grounder from Provo's Staci Griner but the ball was misplayed by the first baseman. Hill struck out the next batter and then got American Fork's Candice Young to pop up to get out of the inning. However, the first baseman dropped the pop up, Griner scores and the inning continued. Hill walks two batters to load the bases before striking out the last batter. In the top of the fourth, Region Six tied the game at 2-2 when Payson's Amanda Jolley connected for a RBI-single to bring home Springville's Kalley Reed. He was named to an all-state team for his work as the soccer team's goalie. He also started start-ed for the Bruins in basketball basket-ball and football. Orem's Brooks Christiansen and Mountain View's Isa Takahashi are finishing up great prep careers. Christiansen was an all-region all-region football player, ran the point on the third-place finishing basketball team and played shortstop on the third-place finishing baseball base-ball team. Takahashi played football, foot-ball, baseball and wrestled for the Bruins. Travis Barney, a junior, plays football and baseball for the Tigers. He also finished fin-ished - sixth in the state track and field meet in the javelin. On the girl's side, Marsha Heimuli was listed. A great Softball player and a starter on the basketball team and according to the article she's ' on the volleyball. Lots of Orem athletes play two sports. More than I can name, I filled two handwritten hand-written pages with a list of names, but a few that I wanted to mention because they are all-state caliber players in the sports they play. Plenty of long-distance runners compete in cross country and track. For Mountain View, Heidi Houle, Heidi Magill, Nate Houle, Mike Steele and Steve Strickland of been big over the years in leading each team to success. The same can be said about Orem's Amber Harper. Mountain View's Mallary Gillespie is an all-state player in softball and basketball bas-ketball and teammate Kaycie Zimmerman is an all-state player in softball and soccer. They are probably proba-bly the best two-sport ath letes I've seen in the past couple of years and two of my favorites to watch compete. com-pete. Timpanogos' Mac Nelson would of been all-state in baseball if it were not for an injury. The pitcher hurt his shoulder while leading the T-Wolves to the region title in basketball. I'd definitely say his junior season on the hardwood was all-state worthy. wor-thy. Lastly, I've noticed that Utah prep athletes don't get as much respect on the national scene as they should. I believe I've been lucky to cover high school sports in Utah County and more particularly in Orem. I've had the opportunity to cover national championship winning win-ning teams in cross country and basketball. The Bruins girls basketball basket-ball team is annually one of the op programs in the country. Kristin Richards, the best volleyball player in the country, played her prep career just down the road. Heather Hansen and Courtney Asay were named the top players in Utah in girls basketball and girls soccer respectively. Bruin coach Dave Houle has put together a resume of success is unable to be touched by any other high school coach in the land. His 60 state titles in the last 23 years are unparalleled. His win-loss percentage in the five sports he coaches is staggering. I would say that Orem might be one of the best high school sports cities around. I can only hope at my next stop that I will surrounded sur-rounded with such impressive impres-sive athletes and coaches, not only on the playing field but as people. They have made this job fun season after season. last for long. Spanish Fork's Bridgette Miller replaced Payson's Candice Forsey on the mound and was greeted rudely by the Region Seven batters. Orem's Devrie Downey and Wright, a Bruin, singled. sin-gled. Wright took second uncontested before Mallary Gillespie came in to pinch run for her. Mountain View and the Times' MVP Kaycie Zimmerman hit a single past the infield to bring Downey home. Nicole Stratton's ground out brought Gillespie home. Lone Peak's Abby Lyman singled to bring Zimmerman home. In the fifth, Region Seven added another run. Hill singled with two outs and advanced on a wild pitch. Welling singled moving Hill to third. Then Welling got herself in a run down between first and second on purpose. pur-pose. She made the defense run after her long enough to allow Hill to score from third. In the sixth, McCustion, via a walk, and .Gillespie, via a single, sin-gle, reached base with no outs but the next two batters bat-ters failed to get the runners run-ners home. Zimmerman hit the ball hard to second sec-ond and it went off the defenders glove, through her legs and to the out- " f - ."V . -: ... . , y ? m. . . . . J : . Downey pitched the last three innings for Region Seven and she Photo by Martin Harris Times' MVP Kaycie Zimmerman went l-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI. They combined to allow 12 hits, eight runs, six earned and four walks in six innings. "These kids can hit anybody," Jones said. "This was for bragging rights." Region Seven pitching looked much better as Mikalauski, Hill and Downey combined to work seven innings giving giv-ing up just one earned run on five hits and they struck out 10. Eleven of the 13 batters bat-ters for Region Seven reached base at least once. Gillespie and Lyman both had a multi-hit multi-hit game. Welling, McCustion and Lyman reached base during every plate appearance. McCustion tripled and walked twice. Welling walked, singled and reached on an error. Lyman singled twice and was left on deck in her team's last at-bat. McCustion and Gillespie were the only two players in the game to score two runs. Downey won the home run hitting contest prior to the game.
