The Tigers have beaten the cross-town rivals in more than five years and after blowing an early 2-0 lead it appeared the streak would continue. However, Mike Morgan had different ideas. He took a two-out, two-strike curve ball from Timpanogos's Greg Decker for a ride over the left field wall. It was a grand slam giving Orem a 7-4 lead. The Tiger's Andy Wilding closed the door. He pitched a complete game allowing three earned runs and striking out four. "Wilding battled the whole game," Orem coach Ray McCoy said. "Andrew doesn't get shaken up when he's pitching." Wilding did it with his bat also. He got the offense going with a two-RBI double dou-ble in the first inning. Timpanogos stormed back. The third started with a single and sacrifice bunt but then it blew up quickly. With two walks, two singles, a pair of errors and a balk all coming with the next five batters, the T-Wolves took a 4-2 lead. "We were down against the number one team. They usually don't allow teams to get back up," McCoy said. "Timpanogos is a dangerous team from top to bottom." With one out in the fifth, Matt McCoy and Matt Woolsey connected for singles sin-gles but then Devin Wilkins flied out to right for the second sec-ond out of the inning. It appeared Decker and the Wolves would get out of trouble. Catcher Trent Barney hit a clutch two-out single to keep the inning going and to score an Orem run. Decker walked Brooks Chrsitiansen setting up Morgan's dramatic grand slam. "We were knocking on the door," McCoy said referring refer-ring to a tough loss last year to the T-Wolves. "Today, we kicked the door in," he said to his team after the win. Timpanogos did put the tying run on base as they loaded them up in the seventh sev-enth with one out but they would only score one run. McCoy said his team will celebrate in their usual way. By getting back on the field tomorrow and practicing and working hard. They have Mountain View waiting. m 'm-'M' 1 uwwWHWM-HWU x'mW-WMWJ W4! 'A!-!.'.' 11 ; ; ! 1 ' 'S, fS?: - . '.:., K.f ' . Prep Softball Pitching Due MARTIN HARRIS Times Sports Editor Timpanogos's Lyndsi Hill and Springville's Lacey Long would not budge an inch and it took extra innings before finally the Timberwolves could get a player across the plate. The 1-0 win might be the best pitching duel this season sea-son has seen. Hill threw a no-hitter through eight innings of work as she struck out 12. Long's efforts were almost as impressive. She gave up only three singles sin-gles in the loss. "Lyndsi pitched an outstanding out-standing game. She carries us," Timpanogos coach Randy Richins said. Timpanogos did not get a player past second base until the eighth. Springville did get some base runners complements of four T-Wolf errors. In the seventh, the Red Devils had a runner on third with one out but Hill struck out the last two batters. bat-ters. "We gave up a couple of errors but we had the mental men-tal toughness to stay in the game," Richins said. "Last year, we would have given up the unearned runs." Going into the eighth, international tiebreaker rules went into place and each team starts the inning with a runner on second. The Devils leadoff batter struck out but then the Timpanogos left fielder dropped a fly ball putting runners on first and second with only one out. The first Springville batter bat-ter bunted to the first baseman base-man but instead of getting the sure out, Chelsey Brown threw to third in an effort to cut down the lead runner. However, third baseman Hayli Duke was not on the bag because she had charged to cover the bunt play but she made the biggest defensive play of the game to preserve the 0-0 tie. After she received the ball, she looked back and noticed the base runner had slid past the base. Duke dove toward the player and laid the tag on her before she could scramble back. Instead of bases loaded and one out, Duke made it first and second with two outs. A pop up ended the inning. Timpanogos started with Dara Grob on second and Liz Thomsen laid down the bunt. The first baseman threw to third but Grob slid in safely and did not stray from the bag. The next batter bat-ter popped up, then Ashley Brown came through with the big offensive play. She hit a grounder deep to the shortstop and the play came late at the plate as Grob scored the winning run. Prep Softball McConkie's 4 RBIs lead Tigers past the Dons 9-1 MARTIN HARRIS Times Sports Editor Despite frigid temperatures, tempera-tures, Orem's Devrie Downey kept Spanish Fork from getting the big hit as she beat the Dons 9-1. It was not smooth sailing for the junior. The Dons managed to get base runners run-ners in six of the seven innings but they left seven stranded. The biggest defensive defen-sive stand by the Tigers came in the fourth. The Dons loaded the bases with no outs but the lead runner was thrown out trying to advance home on a bang-bang play by center fielder Nicole Stratton and catcher Marsha Heimuli. The next two Dons hit grounders to the infielders. Orem blew the game open with a three-run fifth and a five-run sixth. Both innings were highlighted by a two-out, two-RBI single by Kristine McConkie. She went 2-for-3 with four RBIs for the game. "We got big hits and played well defensively," Orem coach Paul Clark said. "We came out with confidence con-fidence and got a good win." The bats were swinging well for almost everyone in the Tiger lineup as eight starters got at least one hit. In addition to striking out seven batters for the win, Downey went 2-for-4 from the plate with two doubles dou-bles and two RBIs. With everyone else canceling can-celing games due to the cold weather, the Tigers and Dons proved they might be the physically toughest teams in Utah County.
