Times Correspondent Few businesses are there that have been in operation for more than half-a-centu-1 ry in Orem. One of those few is Salmon Pharmacy, which was located at 771 North State Street for more than 56 years. Brent Warren, current owner of Salmon Pharmacy, said he had no reason to believe, when he bought the business back in 1998, that the pharmacy would be operated in any other location loca-tion for many years to come. However, the dynamics of Orem's State Street commercial com-mercial operations last year brought about a dramatic change in the status quo of the existing businesses on the southwest corner of 800 North State Street. With the purchase of the three business properties at that location last year, the three tenants, including Salmon Pharmacy, lost their leases and had to make arrangements to move to new locations. Fortuitously, construction of the new Pinehurst Retail Plaza got underway in 2002, and offered an ideal location to which Salmon Pharmacy could be relocated. An ideal space in Pinehurst Retail Plaza was found at 450 West 800 North, and arrangements were made to move Salmon Pharmacy to that location. But how could the "Good Neighbor Pharmacy" atmosphere atmos-phere and brand of service be moved from the old building to the new building? build-ing? Some people might think that the day of the friendly neighborhood drug store is a thing of the past. Perhaps, they remember the day when a distraught mother or father could run down to the local pharmacy n i ' " ' . ;r.. : : ; I ... i r. :- ,., ... , ..... .... i i - f . - i - , z ' " ' "' '' - . . ! - hi ' - ' r- - ' ' - ; ' ' ' ' -). i J , J : .. . The druggist might even send along a popsicle or two for the parent to give to the child. In 1947, pharmacist J. Warren Salmon and his wife, Klea, moved with their family from Reno, Nev. to the City of Orem, where they built a brand-new pharmacy building at 771 North State Street. Salmon Pharmacy became a popular neighborhood neighbor-hood source of prescription pharmaceuticals, as well as assorted personal care products, prod-ucts, newspapers, magazines, maga-zines, and even candy. On cold winter days, it was not unusual to see several people, peo-ple, waiting for the Greyhound Bus after they had purchased their tickets inside the store. In 1965, Jack Salmon purchased Salmon Pharmacy from his father and operated it for 33 years, until he retired in 1998. After serving them and filling fill-ing their prescriptions for so many years, Jack Salmon considered his customers as his extended family. When Jack Salmon retired in 1998, pharmacist Brent Warren purchased Salmon Pharmacy with a commitment to carry on the long tradition of operating a "Good Neighbor Pharmacy." Nothing much has changed at Salmon Pharmacy, except the location. loca-tion. Warren emphasizes the same friendly service, and the telephone number is still 225-2150. a Mi J 1 V7ni o ft t in A .. i u uw! r Mi ' 1 - u uJ u jdJo mm A' OUR SAUCY SIGNATURE WHISKEY RIVER BBQ BURGER . . j i . CLYDE E. WEEKS, JR. Times Correspondent Moving ahead with what could be a $50 million mixed-use residential and commercial high-rise project proj-ect at 300 South State Street, developers are now actively marketing units in the Midtown Village, preliminary pre-liminary to actual construction construc-tion of the development. The property, consisting of nearly eight acres, presently houses the Four Seasons Trailer Court, a car wash and other buildings. build-ings. It has been placed in the site-specific PD-23 zone by the Orem City Council. Residents of the Four Seasons Trailer Court have been notified of the impending development and planned closing of the facility upon 90 days notice. Meanwhile, five of the 57 trailers in the Four Seasons have already moved out, while several others are intending to move out by March 31. Midtown Village's concept con-cept of mixing commercial, office and residential uses in the same development is new to Orem, but has already been constructed at the Gateway in Salt Lake City and the Riverwoods in Provo. Mayor Jerry Washburn called the Midtown Village a "monumental project that will affect all the citizens of Orem." According to Larry Myler, Midtown Village developer, 80 percent of his project will be less than seven stories high, while 20 percent will be seven stories sto-ries high. At least 50 percent per-cent of the planned condominiums condo-miniums will have balconies bal-conies and will vary in roofline height, color, fa?ade depth and relief rhythm.
