The Bruins finished with six errors leading to five unearned runs for the Lions. "We didn't take care of the ball and the errors really hurt us," assistant coach Doug Meek said. "It looked like first game jitters." jit-ters." The jitters did not affect the Bruin bats. They tallied tal-lied eight hits in 22 official appearances, a team average aver-age of .364. Mountain View built a 6-1 lead in the top of the third. Katie Welling belted a double and Mallary Gillespie reached base on the only Payson error of the game. She stole second and Kaycie Zimmerman reached on a fielders 4 'Ml; 'T4 if "to -r: Photo by Martin Harris Mallary Gillespie tries to check her swing. Bridgette Strickland singled sin-gled bringing home Zimmerman and Wright's pinch runner Amy Welling. Chelsey Mikalauski singled sin-gled and Strickland crossed home. The big inning might have been enough last year but Payson was not going to give up. The Lions rallied with four in the bottom bot-tom of the inning. They were helped by a pair of errors by Mountain View and a couple of bad decisions on were to go for an out. "We had a couple of sure outs that we didn't get," Meek said. "We're young and inexperienced inexperi-enced but they are correctable mistakes." A triple by Gillespie in the fourth and a RBI single by Zimmerman gave them a two-run lead. View (7) AT Payson (8) Softball Mountain View pitcher Kaycie Zimmerman had a rough first start as the Bruins fell 8-7 against Payson. Five of the Lion runs were unearned however. so it was do-or-die for the Lions. The leadoff batter walked but it was followed by successive ground outs and it appeared Mountain View would escape with the win. Payson's McKell Shurtliff hit one deep for a triple. Amanda Jolley did the same as Payson tied the game. The game looked like it was heading to extra innings when Sam Scott lofted a fly ball to right field but the sixth error was a killer as the ball was dropped. Mtn. In their first three games, the reigning state champs have outscored opponents 40-12. "I thought we'd struggle early scoring runs but a whole bunch of guys have started the season well," Timpanogos coach Kim Nelson said. The scoring started early as Tyson Gonzalez and Jace Bramwell both reached setting set-ting up Ryder Olsen for a two-RBI double. The T-Wolves T-Wolves batted .423 for the game and scored in every inning. The highlight of the game came in the fourth inning. The Vikings' new pitcher, Josh Peay, was rudely greeted by back-to-back home runs by Bramwell and Olsen. Peay did not finish the inning and Timpanogos got to him for six runs. On the mound, Kevin Wilkey pitched a scoreless first two innings before running run-ning into some trouble in the third. He walked a batter bat-ter and then allowed consecutive consec-utive singles allowing two runs to score. Wilkey finished fin-ished the inning. Josh Halls pitched the final two innings by retiring six of the last eight batters. Earlier in the week, Timpanogos found out last year's 4A MVP will not pitch this season. "Our pitching is going to be okay. There isn't one person per-son that can fill the void," coach Nelson said. "It means some other kids are going to get opportunities to pitch and so far they've done well." . - .-: vmtn t-.Ji ii. .... v -y - ,r.-f - - - f ' r" , r1"- ! ! f .i i i : "M I f. i. i. i :.- - ,:eve T-tOI - fi - - .J7 XL,.- ,mm , , ' H I Photo bv Martin Hit1 Homerun!
